We LOVE sharing the breastfeeding love through imagery, which is why we are so passionate about showcasing moms breastfeeding on Instagram, the visual social media network.

That’s a lot of boobs and babies.

So why is it that Instagram moms #cantstopwontstop when it comes to showing their babies getting that sweet liquid gold? Because visualization is important. There is a reason that inspirational speakers, and athletes put such an emphasis on visualizing their goals: because the power of imagery makes SUCH an impact on our brains, that mental visualizations are shown to be almost as effective as physical practice (source).

How does that correlate to the importance of seeing women breastfeeding on Instagram? Because the best way to break down sexual stigmas and breastfeeding ignorance is to make it normal. (Speaking of, if this is something you are passionate about, you are going to want to read this post about being a breastfeeding warrior, and letting go.)

So the best way to make breastfeeding normal, is to see it. It’s why nursing in public isn’t just feeding a baby- it’s changing the way society looks at breasts, moms, and women. Breastfeeding Photography is the foundation of our project, and we will always be proud that we are part of an incredible movement across the globe to support women.

Just Like Me: Real Moms Breastfeeding On Instagram

Breastfeeding World has ALWAYS celebrated breastfeeding mothers on our Instagram feed, but in the New Year, we decided to change things up a bit. For the first week of the year, we decided to show not just images from our stunning team of professional photographers, but to share photos of real women, with real stories, successes, and struggles in a project our editing manager dubbed “Just Like Me: Real Moms Breastfeeding”. We fell in love with photo after photo- every tag, DM, and image of women breastfeeding on Instagram had us cheering in joy.

Here are our absolute favorite images:

1. When Mom breastfeeding on Instagram do it all:

Pumping? No problem. Nursing in public? #nailedit. Getting married? Bring it on. Scottish Mom Olive knows “you do what you gotta do!”

Instagram Photo

2. Breastfeeding with Ginormous Boobs

There is a complete myth out there that if you are a large chested woman, breastfeeding should be easy@Kloudsmama assures while sharing her gorgeous image of her and her child breastfeeding on Instagram, that’s not the case.

Instagram Photo

3.Allllll The Newborn Squishiness

These mommas breastfeeding on Instagram have our ovaries quivering in love. I can practically smell that breastfed newborn sweetness through the screen. Twenty to life, Lauren, twenty to life!

4. “I’ll breastfeed as long as she wants!”

Why is it that society thinks that if you breastfeed past one, it’s instantly time to start weaning your child? While full term breastfeeding isn’t as extreme as people like to think, the social stigmas surrounding it keep many moms practicing boundaries and not sharing photos of themselves breastfeeding as much. That’s part of the reason we are SO in love with this milk bath image that Hawaiian mom, Aubrie, shared:

5. Sweet, Sweet Baby Rolls

There isn’t a mom out there not in love with sweet milky sustained baby rolls. And the look of love in this sweet girl’s eyes give us all the feels.

Instagram Photo

6. Breastfeeding while pregnant

Another breastfeeding myth out there is that it’s not safe to breastfeed while pregnant, and Aida’s stunning photos shine with proof that in most cases, it’s just not true. (Not to mention, we love the before and after of the pregnancy and then tandem nursing!)

Instagram Photo

7. Motherhood, Unfiltered

Over and over, moms breastfeeding on Instagram show that women are multi-tasking queens! And while we all get touched out one time or another, we also frequently remind ourselves just how lucky we are to be so needed and loved.

8. #MomGoals

I don’t know any mom that has ever looked so amazingly empowered while breastfeeding on Instagram as Jessie. I’d double dog dare anyone to try to shame her breastfeeding her adorable son. Double. Dog. Dare.

9. Anytime, anywhere

These three mamas take breastfeeding on Instagram to a whole new level. (Anyone recognize our very own Abby D?) They are showing the world that when your kiddo is hungry, your kiddo gets to eat. End. Of. Story.

10. Beautiful Breastfeeding

No caption needed.

Instagram Photo

Make up, no shower, professional photography or a quick brelfie with your iPhone- mothers across Instagram are uniting together for a powerful cause. The point isn’t to “flash your boobs”, “get attention”, “act like you’re a better mom”, or any other stupid comment you hear society say when they try to oppress images of women nursing.

When nursing moms share images of ourselves nursing, post brelfies, or simply nurse in public, we are showing the world that breastfeeding is just a mom and a baby, and that is beautiful. And we are telling other nursing moms that they are okay, they don’t have to hide, and they are not alone

So let’s #uniteinmotherhood , Share the breastfeeding love, and keep posting those pics!

A beautiful piece about the power of imagery in the normalizie breastfeeding campaign, particularly moms sharing breastfeeding photos on instagram. #brelfie #breastfeedingworld #normalizebreastfeeding #breastfeedingphotography

Erica Farwell Photography captures Breastfeeding World’s first ever Guam Photo Shoot:

A mother’s breastfeeding journey is no doubt a life event that is most successful and enjoyable when we have the support of others, and guidance of those who have gone before us.

That is why it’s no surprise that when Alexia Garcia began her New York City photo project through Alegares Photography, it became a vital resource, encouraging and empowering mothers. What began within the NYC community, now stretches across the globe.

Breastfeeding World has grown so much over the few short years of its existence.

After having our first-ever out of country event in Ecuador in August 2017, we headed to the West Pacific Island of Guam and held Breastfeeding World’s second out of country photo shoot with Erica Farwell Photography.

Quick Facts About Guåhan (Guam)

 • Guåhan, as locals refer to Guam, is a territory of the United States, similar in country status as Puerto Rico. The tropical island is nearly half way across the world from from Washington, D.C. (about 7,920 miles!). It is roughly an 8 hour flight west of Hawaii, 3.5 hour flight south of Japan and is home to over 160,000 island residents.
 • The weather is summer all year around. IT. IS. HOT! But it is also the island paradise many seek, with its white sand and clear blue beach waters.
 • The local food is amazing. It’s a blend of pacific-asian flavors – heavy on the rice and soy sauce. With just the right touch of Chamorro flavor, it’s incomparable to others.
 • The hospitality of the people is like none other in the world.
 • And if you ask any tourists from Asia, the luxury shopping is just the topper of what makes Guåhan such a renowned destination for travel and vacation in the pacific.

An island full of diversity

Guam is native home of Chamorros, though a vast majority of the population, identify as Guamanian – locals who consider Guåhan home but may not come from native lineage. It’s a fascinating diverse population full of culture from other outer Micronesian islands like Palau, Chuuk, Kosrae, Yap and Pohnpei, further combined with Asian flare of residents with ties to Japan, China, Vietnam, Thailand and the Philippines. And that’s just a few!

And while there was much political controversy the month prior to the Guåhan Photo Shoot (the first instance of North Korean missile threats to the island in August 2017), there wasn’t much to stop local moms from gathering for Breastfeeding World’s event.

Guåhan’s Iconic Latte Stone Park

The most remarkable aspect about Breastfeeding World that sets our community apart from others in the #normalizebreastfeeding movement, is documenting mothers and children in the most iconic places of our cities. For Guåhan residents, aside from the beautiful beach shores, the Angel Santos Latte Stone Memorial Park is iconic as it gets. It’s lies in the city capital of Hagåtña and makes for a central commute for residents.

Latte Stones are one of the very few artifacts from Chamorro ancient society that remain.

Breastfeeding World, Guam

These megalith structures are carved from limestone and were then used as a foundation for traditional hut houses. The stone’s height is also a symbol for class, with larger latte stones belonging to higher class residents, like chiefs. Smaller latte stones, thus, belonged to lower class residents.

Throughout Guåhan’s history – through multiple country colonization and the World Wars – a majority of existing latte stones of the island were destroyed. What remains standing give locals and academic scholars a glimpse into what ancient Chamorro villages may have looked like prior to western influence.

Capturing the Spirit of Guåhan

We couldn’t have asked for a better landmark to capture the spirit of Guåhan. The setting of Latte Stones in the background and gathering of event attendees were a perfect representation of the island as it is today. Seeing a gathering of both local residents and military personnel was beyond AMAZING.

Bridging the Gap between local and military families

There is an inherent gap between local and military communities in terms of shared community resources. This is often seen in countries with overseas military bases, like Guåhan. Often, locals do not have access to military resources, and military families are less familiar of available local resources. In the mist of it, having Breastfeeding World’s event open to the public meant all families could gather in support of normalizing breastfeeding and connect with each other as breastfeeding advocates for the island.

There are dozens of volunteers from a handful of local organizations who lead the island’s breastfeeding movements.

They are the Breastfeeding Action Team Guam, which is comprised of educators, lactation consultants, medical professionals, doulas, nurses, business owners, government leaders, etc. Their expertise play a hand in guaranteeing that local moms have their breastfeeding rights heard at work and in public spaces. Contributing hard spent time, they focus on bringing awareness to the island. Together, they do this by educating the community of the benefits of breastfeeding and the resources of support that are available to families.

Sharing resources as a community is the goal

Breastfeeding World’s Guåhan shoot gave the perfect opportunity to share these resources with attending guests. While some moms knew about local breastfeeding groups (like IBCLCs Kirsten Robert and Barbara Mafnas’ Guam Mama’s Breastfeeding Support, or the La Leche League of Guam), others did not. While online and physical support systems are in place on island, like other communities, awareness of these resources is limited to just a small portion of the motherhood population.

It was exciting to exchange support groups between military and local moms. Most exciting was encouraging mother’s to attend the free Saturday Socials at Guam’s birthing center, Sagua Managu. Every week, Barbara Mafnas, IBCLC, holds free community classes for mothers. She does assessments on babies, checking weight, checking latch, etc. It’s a great opportunity for families with no health insurance to see a specialist who can help recommend or suggest needs for a their newborn as it relates to breastfeeding.

Mafnas goes the extra mile by providing other exemplary parenting classes for first time parents. She holds Daddy Classes once a month. There, first time fathers can learn the basics of swaddling baby, changing diapers, assisting mom during breastfeeding and other important teachings such as looking for baby cues.

Resources for Local Moms and Military Families

We also shared local government resources for families. Learning about Guåhan’s Women, Infant and Children Program (WIC), gave insight to families who need assistance. It helped clarify questions for those who were curious if they qualified. And it was so nice to have a WIC representative stop by the event to meet with families. This reassured us that there is support for our cause.

For military families who prefer closer to base events, we shared the efforts of Guam’s La Leche League. The group meets twice a month – once in the north, then in the south end of the island. Like BATG, LLL Guam is spearheaded by volunteers, who resumed La Leche League presence on island about 2 years ago. Connor Kelly is the point of contact for LLL Guam. In her work, she speaks about breastfeeding bi-monthly at the airforce base’s Bundles For Babies Program.

What attendees had to say

Let’s preface the highlights of our event by saying that Guam is HOT! We knew traveling from a temperate stateside climate to a tropical island paradise would mean diving into warm weather. However, what we failed to remember was the humidity!

My favorite part was seeing babies of different ages that are being breast fed.

-BFW Guam Guest, on her favorite part of the event

The weather was worth it

We have to (have to!) thank all the families that showed up, socialized and gracefully continued to participate in the shoot despite the weather. The week prior was a never ending rainstorm for the island. This meant that on the first day of no rain, the day of the shoot, there was much more humidity than usual. Top that off with Guam’s heat, gave families a limited amount of time before babies became uncomfortable just hanging outside. It really was so hot with very little breeze that time of day.

There was nothing we could do but laugh and spin our facial sweat as a “glowing” part of the portraits. (Insert chuckle here.)

But that is island life – and island weather. Because of this, the shoot started a few minutes earlier than planned. However, even after group photos were done, guest were still making their way to the shoot. It was nice to see mothers drop by and get individual photos taken by Erica Farwell to contribute to the Photo Project.

I just recently found out about this group online, and for me it meant that there are mothers out there who are successful BF mothers who achieved thier goals with the help of others support. They have thier own stories to share, with struggles, but were able to finish thier goal by getting help from support groups like this.

-MJCT, on what Breastfeeding World means to her

Empowering and encouraging mothers is our mission

While the weather wasn’t the most comfortable, many of the guests said they would attend another event like this in the future. It was great to hear that mothers were encouraged to be comfortable nursing in public. This most especially for locals who come from very traditionally cultured backgrounds. In sense of encouragement was felt in every conversation.

For me and my family it made us comfortable feeding around others most especially new people!
– BFW Guam Guest, on the impact BFW has on her community
It helps encourage me and other mothers to continue breastfeeding, and to show first time mothers and the rest of our community that breastfeeding is natural and that we should be able to do so publicly.
– BFW Guam Guest, on the impact BFW has on her community

Creating a Community

Before and after the photo session, we raffled off Breastfeeding World Swag Bags that included state side sponsors from the Big Latch On. We also had great giveaways from local shops like The Modern Bump and Shop Guam Mom Life.

Beyond the photos, beyond the raffles, was the highlight of creating a community, then connecting mothers with each other face to face.

The online community of motherhood is a very strong, empowering one. So, naturally, meeting people in person really makes an impact on that camaraderie.

Which was made evident through the guests’ response to their favorite part of the event:

“Being with and meeting new people.

-BFW Guam Guest

“Taking the photos and meeting everyone.

-BFW Guam Guest

“Meeting other moms.

-BFW Guam Guest

“The mothers who i got to meet during the shoot.

-BFW Guam Guest

Sharing impact

One suggestion that spoke volumes of the need and want from mothers for more community support in breastfeeding was:

More mothers ! Also a word of mouth publicity about more events like this.

-BFW Guam Guest, on what could BFW Guam better

The power of community is strong. The movement of normalizing breastfeeding is border-less. Whether it be online or in person, finding that tribe which supports families in the journey of parenthood is an amazing feeling. And that is the heart of Breastfeeding World.

Connecting in Struggles and Triumphs through Breastfeeding

“After months of struggling, I finally reached peace. I found confidence, self love and the empowerment to be proud of my breastfeeding journey. Attending Breastfeeding World for me was a life changing experience. For the first time I’d been a part of something I felt passion for. Even as a mother I still to that day had never seen women proudly breastfeeding in public. I always felt ashamed for even thinking about feeding my daughter without a nursing cover around other people who weren’t my husband. On that day my attitude changed for the better and I couldn’t be more thankful. I now feed my daughter without a doubt or worry in my mind, my concerns are back to revolving around my daughter instead of other peoples opinions.”

– Kat Hovey, on her BFW Guam experience

Building Breastfeeding World Awareness

https://youtu.be/r6NrRlMsldg?t=19m40s

Guåhan’s success in creating a breastfeeding friendly community lies within the work of local organizations.

This includes BATG, LLL Guam, the Guam Mama’s Breastfeeding Support Group and the many breastfeeding advocates who call Guam home. They’ve made impressive achievements in recent years.

Breastfeeding World, Guam

Just a few years ago, BATG helped Guåhan make public breastfeeding and employer support law through the Nana yan Patgon Act. They’ve helped the local hospitals commit to seeking WHO baby friendly status. They were recognized by WHO with a generous grant to help fund educational efforts of breastfeeding on island. Later, BATG would be awarded a National Recognition for Guåhan’s MagPRO Awards, the prestigious Government of Guam Employee Recognition Awards. Additionally, they’ve recently provided uniform training on breastfeeding to local hospitals and clinics. This ensures that both families and medical staff are aware of options for baby after birth, which eliminates the often quick handed prescription for formula during feedings.

A Successful Event by Community Support

We’d like to thank all the community organizations that helped to spread the word of Breastfeeding World’s First Ever Guåhan Photo Shoot. The Mommy Support Groups on Facebook have been extremely kind. Thank you, Guam Mama’s Breastfeeding Support, The Guam Mom’s Group and Guam Mommies! We’d also like to thank the Guam Daily Post for publishing the event announcement through the #MomLife Column. To KUAM, for featuring our project on the evening news. We’d also like to thank K57 radio for having us on the air to discuss the importance of empowering mothers to breastfeed. Extra special thanks to the Dept of Parks and Recs for assisting with photography permits so quickly!

We so much appreciate our local sponsors who provided awesome giveaways to our guests. Thank you to The Modern Bump for the amazing gifts to raffle off. Thank you to Graceful Journey Doula Services, Shop Guam MomLife, and Guam Birth Boot Camp for your contributions as well!

A Very Special Thank You

Breastfeeding World, Guam

We deeply appreciate all the families that attended our event. Capturing Guam and the small portion of it’s breastfeeding community through Breastfeeding World’s Lens could not have been possible without your presence and advocacy.

Finally, at the heart of all this is Erica Farwell Photography. Erica was such a joy to work with on our short trip. She made the group shoot and individual shoots fun, friendly and relaxed. Even with babies uncomfortable from the heat, she still found a way to capture the most darling moments between mother and child. You can find her work at www.ericafarwellphotography.com. She specializes in family and senior portraits on Guam. Fun fact: it was Erica’s first time to Latte Stone Park herself!

Welcome to Breastfeeding World, Guam!

After all was done, the shoot was much more than just an event to attend. It was an opportunity for island residents to come together. To encourage each other’s breastfeeding goals. And join the community of Breastfeeding World that extends beyond Guåhan’s shores.

The Big Day

With the rain looming overhead, we hunkered down and packed the car full of this year’s hard work for New York City’s Third Annual Big Latch On. Despite the weather, which thankfully cleared up in time for our latch and picnic, we watched as an incredible group of families gathered before the red TKTS steps to make history again. Every year, we are blown away by the support and love we feel at Breastfeeding World’s Big Latch On.

And this year, was one for the record in support. With over 223 breastfeeding supporters, the diversity of our families was incredible. Fathers, Grandmothers, Grandfathers, siblings, cousins, all came together to support the breastfeeding mother in their life. It was that moment that I thought to myself, this is what it is about. THIS is normalizing breastfeeding. Over the years, we have watched as our attendees go from mother and baby, to whole families and it brings tears to my eyes.

76 babies latched with love in Times Square on August 5th 2017

Why is normalizing breastfeeding so important?

Normalizing breastfeeding is so much more than breastfeeding. It is about motherhood, about our choices as a family in how we care for our children. Normalizing breastfeeding provides support to all mothers in how they choose to feed their child. Whether that be through generational knowledge, lactation consultants, properly educated medical professionals and so much more. No mother should face this journey alone, as it is the most difficult and yet most rewarding thing we do in our lives. Any way in which you feed your child is normal, because it is your normal. That is what normalizing breastfeeding is all about.

Introducing Milk Mates, a new Breastfeeding Support System to help mothers reach thier breastfeeddign goals, designed by Breastfeeding World. Alegares Photography, NYC Big Latch On

How Does the Global Big Latch on & Breastfeeding World help normalize breastfeeding?

First, the more breastfeeding is seen in day to day life, the more normal it becomes. The Global Big Latch On works to do just that. This year, the Global Big Latch On registered 725 locations across 23 countries. That is a tremendous impact around the world, uniting families across the globe for one whole minute.

17,790 children breastfed during the one-minute count

18,036 breastfeeding women attended

Breastfeeding World participates in the Global Big Latch On, for that unity. To bring mothers in our local community, and across the country, together in unison in the name of motherhood and breastfeeding.

NYC Big Latch On, 2017 Big Latch, Jessica Speerit,

Breastfeeding can be hard, motherhood can be hard, and we all should have the support we crave! But, we don’t just stop there. Throughout the year, we connect mothers with the information they need to be successful in their personal breastfeeding goals. We work to provide the network that we all need to recognize as many of the struggles of feeding as a new mother can, and get her to the point of comfort, love and bonding.

How Does The Breastfeeding World Big Latch On Impact Our Community?

There is something special – indescribable – about being surrounded by a tribe of women who feel empowered by their ability to nourish their children through breastfeeding. I knew maybe four women there, but we all “knew” each other. -Tara Woebbe Alcaraz

We met on the red steps in NYC’s Times Square, where we all gathered to nurse our babies for exactly one minute together. What an empowering moment, to be able to join together, worry-free, not focusing on anyone looking or wondering what anyone was thinking – just feeding our babies. -Jessica Speer

At first, breastfeeding was the most challenging part of motherhood for me. Now, it is my absolute favorite. Meeting all of these wonderful moms at this event made me feel so supported; knowing I wasn’t the only one, as cliche as that sounds. Breastfeeding World made me feel like I was a part of something that will benefit my son forever. And I thank everyone for such a wonderful learning experience. -Evelyn Helena

Thank you for giving us a space to celebrate and unite over breastfeeding -Labella Siciliana

It was such an eye opening experience for me. When I first started my breastfeeding journey after having my daughter, I struggled alone and felt judged when I had to nurse out in public. Being there, with a village of like minded warriors on those red steps that day made me feel undefeatable. I did not need to worry for one second about someone who might approach with something rude to say about me nursing my baby. I wish everyday could be so easy. -Lyssa Tsao

I was happy to be able to volunteer as I attended my first Big Latch On. I’m not currently breastfeeding myself, but continuing to promote this natural practice is as important to me now as when I was nursing. One of my favorite things was seeing how many Dads came to be a part of the event. Support of our partners is so important, and they were right there along side the moms, cheering them on. Standing directing in from of the stands, listening to the countdown to latch, seeing the triumph on all of the faces of the participants… these are the images that will always stand out to me. I was just on the sidelines, but you could feel how beautiful the moment was. I teared up! -Jacquie Rossi

What spoke volumes to me was the amount of spouses there to support their breastfeeding wives – that says A LOT about the character of our spouses, but also the mutual respect and support that is necessary in a partnership, that is so critical to the success of breastfeeding. -Tara Woebbe Alcaraz

Big Latch On #3 was a blast as always. So much support and love. -Lissette

We Couldn’t Have Done It Without You!

As we reach out to our community each year, we are blown away by the generosity we find among us. From our donors & contributors, to our volunteers, everyone works tirelessly to make this event possible for each and every one of our attendees. It is no doubt, that everyone who contributes, whether it be goodies or their time, does it out of love for breastfeeding, our communities and our families.

Thank You

Baltic Essentials provided every family with an amber necklace. Kindred Bravely gave incredible bamboo breast pads to every family plus a gift card to one lucky winner. Mommycon donated awesome swag bags to our Central Indiana location AND tickets to Mommycon NYC (I’ll see ya there) for our families here in NYC. Soul Slings donated the most beautiful carrier to one lucky family. I could go on! We were amazed at the generosity of our donors and all of the incredible goodies we were able to giveaway to our families.

A tremendous thank you to Phoenix Medical Equipment, for providing us with a Ameda Breast pump that we were honored to gift to a very special mother. Having experienced a loss, now blessed with a miracle baby, she faced a diagnosis that she was not prepared for. The Breast pump with give this mother and her baby the best possible start. She explained to us all of the research in favor of breastmilk for a baby diagnosed with Down Syndrome, but the difficulties that they will likely face with latching. This gift will provide this sweet family the peace of mind and allow her to provide breastmilk to her precious babe. Stayed tuned for a video dedication from this sweet momma!

We cannot thank you enough for the incredible generosity

Throughout the year, we will continue to strengthen our online community, bringing you information on breastfeeding, motherhood, childhood development and more on our blog, as well as some reviews of awesome breastfeeding goodies. We will continue to do breastfeeding photoshoots around the country. Because, like we said, the more breastfeeding is seen in day to day life, the more normal it will become. Plus, aren’t they just gorgeous?!

It is also very important to all of us to work closely with our community throughout the year. In NYC, I have been working closely with one of our wonderful contributors, Wild Was Mama, to bring some smaller, focused, support group style events to our community in their beautiful location in Brooklyn.

On August 5, over 180 mothers and 480 Breastfeeding supporters gathered to nurse their babies, discover resources, and finally, celebrate!

Families came from all over for Central Indiana’s Breastfeeding World 2017 Big Latch On in Central Indiana.

Why a huge event, about something so simple as feeding a child? Breastfeeding moms, feeding babies? What’s the big deal?

Because, even though breastfeeding is natural, it isn’t always simple. And even though motherhood is beautiful, it is also challenging. And messy. And even a little lonely. So yes, the latch, the bond, the breastfeeding, it’s why we gather. It’s why we support one other. But Breastfeeding World’s 2017 Big Latch On Events are more than that. These breastfeeding celebrations are about Unity. Here, we discover we are not alone in our breastfeeding journeys. Together, we are uniting in Motherhood.

After all, our children are the reasons we began this journey to begin with.

I love that once I arrived, my sense of loneliness went away. I felt empowered and supported. My family and my husband love that I breastfeed, but none of them support me nursing wherever, whenever.

I loved that I could feed my former NICU baby without fear of being ridiculed for not finding a bathroom or backseat of a hot uncomfortable car. It felt normal. I felt normal, like how it should feel. Just a regular mom, going about her normal business feeding her baby the “normal” way.” -Jessica Down

Here is the 2017 Big Latch On Final Count!

Central Indiana’s 2107 Big Latch On isn’t the only location working to build community support for breastfeeding. Not only did Breastfeeding World proudly host coast-to-coast Latch On’s. Families joined together in Martha’s Vineyard, NYC, Central Indiana, and Downtown Seattle. These Breastfeeding World organized events culminated to almost 300 Latches, and over 1000 breastfeeding supporters. Yet, we were part of an even larger movement.

This year The Global Big Latch On registered 725 locations across 23 countries. The final count numbers ended with:

17,790 children breastfeeding during the one-minute count

18,036 breastfeeding women attended

What an amazing feeling, to sit among so many moms in your community, feeding your babies. Then adding to that feeling, knowing that you are joining in unity with families from all over the world! You can find out more about this year’s global events here.

Impacting our Community

I didn’t know why at first, but I drove home with tears. Mainly because I was so proud to be apart of something like this, considering my breastfeeding journey. It was so very difficult in the start. I felt comfortable after a big even though I came alone! I didn’t win any raffles, but I was a part of something bigger than any gift. Cassidy and I have survived almost 6 months of this journey together and I got to share that with 180+ other mothers.” -Andrea Kernodle-McCauley

The Bubbles were Awesome! They kept my kids (an myself) entertained so I could listen to the names being called for the raffle. Best thing of all would be just being surrounded by so many other breastfeeding mamas. Feeling 100% comfortable and safe to nurse my toddler. To be a part of something like that means so much to me. The health assessment was pretty neat, too!” – Amanda Bowers

“It was incredibly laid back which is the way breastfeeding in public should be! I sat between two women during the latch. The woman to my right had breastfed for 9 years. The woman to my left was breastfeeding in public for the first time. So many women, so many stories. Simply put… it was amazing. My heart smiles every time I think about it. I really appreciated the entertainment for the kiddos! And the amber necklace was the best swag!” – Marcy Brittingham

“My favorite swag item was the pair of Kindred Bravely breast pads. Literally the best pads in the entire world! I’m so mad at myself for just now finding them, I need to order more!” -Kelly Jones

“It was awesome just seeing that Indiana has such a large breastfeeding community. Sad I missed out on that gorgeous Tula from the raffle though! That was one lucky mama.” -Danielle Spangle

“I loved it! I have been more confident and comfortable with feeding in public. I honestly loved the door handle sign! It was so cute and funny. I also loved used the temporary tattoo on my car! I will definitely come next year.” -Andrea Dunham

“I was tearing up during the latch. The air had a different feeling. It was so peaceful, with all of the love and support in one area! My favorite swag was the amber necklaces (From Baltic Essentials)! I won the crunchy mama raffle and I love it!” – Sophie Mullins

Thank You to the Central Indiana Breastfeeding Community

As we excitedly await next year’s Big Latch On, let us continue to support, lift up, and encourage one another, as we “Share the Breastfeeding Love.”

Editor’s Note: I would like to give a special thank you to our Breastfeeding World Team of Volunteers. These women are my personal Breastfeeding World. Sam, Laranda, Alexia, and Lisa- this project has been so much more than about breastfeeding to me. Your friendship and love, along with the empowerment I have felt through these months and months of planning, have helped shape me. To be a better mom. A more connected friend. And perhaps most importantly, a stronger woman than I knew I was. What an amazing feeling to discover; that in empowering other moms, we find ourselves empowered. You ladies are my world, and I adore each of you.

This past August 4th Breastfeeding World celebrated its Second Annual Big Latch On on Martha’s Vineyard.

Thanks to the wonderful participation of our community members we were able to beat our 2016 record by having 21 nursing mothers join us in the synchronized latch on at 10:30 am as well as a total of 60 attendees.

Months of planning and organizing brought yet another successful event to our island community with our goal of promoting but most importantly supporting our local breastfeeding moms.

Each year Breastfeeding World works hard to be able to bring breastfeeding awareness and support through our web portal, our photography project as well as our successful events. With out teams of volunteers we strive to give back to our local communities by giving them the opportunity to enjoy a day to celebrate breastfeeding, to share their experiences and to meet other mommies that are going through the same.

“My favorite part was meeting so many amazing moms, hearing their stories and being able to breastfeed comfortably with no judgment.” – said Jessica Mawjeski a 2017 MV Attendee.

The best part of our events is that we not only integrate our moms and dads but also other family members. A good support system for a nursing mother is extremely important for her success, specially during the first few months after giving birth.

Enjoying it for the second year in a row….

This year we were extremely happy seeing familiar faces that had previously participated in our Latch On last year, we had seven nursing moms that came back this 2017 to participate with their now toddlers. What gave us more satisfaction was knowing that many of them were continuing with their extended breastfeeding journey.

“So wonderful to be part of this gathering again! I loved seeing the mothers and kiddos I met last year as well as made some new friends.” – Elizabeth Bonifacio ’16 &’17 MV Participant.

Breastfeeding into toddlerhood can bring its own set of challenges and if your family has grown then it can be even harder but definitely not impossible. A lot of people truly think that once the baby hits the first year mark there is no reason to continue nursing but the reality is that extended breastfeeding continues to provide your baby with enhanced nutrition, it helps boosts their immune system and brain development and it is also soothing and calming for both moms and their little ones.

“Thank you so much for a wonderful event! It was great to see everyone that participated in the past and meet some new moms and babes. I appreciate the empowerment each and every women shares with me just by being together.” – Sarah Mattson 2016 & 2017 MV Participant.

We couldn’t have done it alone…

Breastfeeding World started as a self funded photography project back in 2014 by our founder Alexia Garcia, it quickly became an online community that offers support to moms around the world and it’s still being self funded.

For our Coast to Coast Big Latch On events this year we were able to partner with some amazing companies and small business that made these events not only possible but extremely successful.

We would like to thank our MV Gold Contributors once again:

“So happy to have shared today with you. It was such an amazing experience to share the day with so many different moms from so many different backgrounds and everyone just getting along. There was no judgment, no sneers, not a single negative aspect of the entire event. I know I didn’t talk to many people but it was still an amazing experience to share.” – said Lee Jaime Lutke 2017 MV participant.

Last year, over 200 mothers and babies gathered on the steps of the Hamilton County Judicial Building and fed their babies, thus participating in Central Indiana’s Big Latch On

This year, for 2017, Breastfeeding World is doing it again with Central Indiana’s Big Latch On! With the help of our volunteers, sponsors, and donors, we are “Spreading the Breastfeeding Love” in Central Indiana by hosting our Second Annual Big Latch On and Community event!

On August 5, 2017, at exactly 10:30am, mothers and babies (and/or their pumps) will gather on the steps of the West Lawn of the Judicial Building in Noblesville Indiana. Together, you will unite with mothers across the World in nursing our babies for one whole minute.

Breastfeeding World's Big Latch On 2017, Central Indiana's Big Latch On,

What is the Global Big Latch On?

The Latch

The Global Big Latch On takes place at registered locations around the world, where women gather together to breastfeed and offer peer support to each other. Their friends, family and community join this celebration to promote and support breastfeeding. Volunteers from within the community host each location, hosting a Global Big Latch On creates a lasting support network for the community.

What to expect at a Global Big Latch On location?

There’s usually a little bit of beautiful chaos, lots of laughter and then some counting. We do have some records to break, which is why we need your help. We count the number of children breastfeeding at the same time (the latch count), how many breastfeeding women gathered and the total number of people who come out to show their support, so bring as
many friends and family members as you can.
At around 10.30am we count all the breastfeeding that is happening. It’s a latch on, so a child’s mouth around a breastfeeding womans’ nipple counts. If you are breastfeeding
twins or triplets (or more!) counts 2/ 3 even if they are not all breastfeeding at the same time. We figure that’s fair enough!
Remember no one checks for milk transfer, children do not have to stay latched for the whole time and all ages are very welcome.
We recognize that everyone’s breastfeeding journey looks different and we want the Global Big Latch On to be as fun and inclusive as possible, while still reaching our aims of positively supporting breastfeeding in public and making it a normal part of day to day life. You can be included in the latch count by latching a child or children; using an supplemental nursing system or nipple shield; expressing milk (hand or pump) or by feeding your child breast milk via an alternative method.

Find out more on their website!

Breastfeeding World’s Big Latch On Community Events

Last year was Breastfeeding World’s first year organizing Tri-state Level Events. We hosted Latch On’s at Times Square in NYC, Martha’s Vineyard, and of course here, in Hamilton County. Together, we celebrated breastfeeding within our unique communities.

Check out our promotional video from last year, made by our founder, Alexia Garcia of Alegares Photography:

What can you expect from this years Central Indiana’s Big Latch On?

First, upon arrival, check in for Nursing Mama’s begins at 9:15, with the Latch itself beginning at exactly 10:00am. Make sure you give yourself plenty of time to find parking! The county told us we are welcome to use the employee lot south of SR 32. The Update

On July 5th 2016, Killian was born sleeping at just 19 weeks gestation. Wendy and her family had to face the unthinkable, mourning the loss of their sweet boy gone too soon. As you can imagine, everything moves so quickly and time with your baby is fleeting. Breastfeeding World shared Wendy’s moving and harrowing story after meeting her at the 2016 Big Latch On in NYC. We listened to the amazing things that Wendy had done up to that point and all of her big plans for the future, and we were inspired. We felt compelled to share her story and her project: bringing Cuddle Cots to New York Methodist Hospital.

Wendy and Killian

Congratulations!

The Team at Breastfeeding World is proud and honored to congratulate Wendy on all of her hard work, strength and perseverance in such a difficult time for her and her family. Her dedication to her project and the memory of her son, Killian, has given an indescribable gift to future families experiencing such a heavy loss at New York Methodist Hospital. Because of Wendy, along with the amazing contributors to her fund, a Cuddle Cot is now at New York Methodist Hospital.

cuddlecot, breastfeeding world, Killian CuddleCot

She keeps going!

But Wendy is not stopping there! Motivated by the beautiful outpouring of love and support, Wendy and her family is moving forward in the collection and bringing Cuddle Cots to more hospitals in the New York Area. Breastfeeding World and I, are honored to have been able to contribute to such an amazing cause.

Wendy Says

“I feel so humbled and grateful to those who have shown their support, generosity and understanding of the importance of CuddleCots. When I began this campaign, I had no expections. I did not think that I would be able to reach my goal of a Cuddle Cot within 3 months! It made me feel a sense of personal accomplishment for my son. Killian was born still on July 5th 2016. To know that so many people know his name; To see the impact he has had around the world, just proved to me that his memory and legacy lives on. Because of that, I will continue on to raise more funds for more CuddleCots to be place in hospitals throughout NYC where it’s needed the most. I know that I cannot prevent a stillbirth or an infant loss, but at least I can give the families the gift of time. Time that I never had with Killian.”

Thank you, from all of us

We would also like to extend official congratulations, thank you and ‘you are amazing’ to Wendy . You have donated over 2,000 ounces of breastmilk to six different babies. You have done an amazing service to the breastfeeding community. Wendy, you have touched so many lives in the most extraordinary fashion. You have inspired us all in an indescribable way.

Thank you Wendy, for all that you have done and continue to do for our community.

The Tree of Life Movement

The normalize breastfeeding campaign has extended and reached far beyond what many could have imagined. Over time, it has grown and transformed into a movement that countless mothers have become a part of. Now, we welcome, The Tree of Life. Mothers from around the world have taken to social media with their beautifully edited images, showcasing their breastfeeding photos overlaid with the tree of life. These images have taken #normalizebreastfeeding by storm.

Keep reading for instructions on how to create your own Tree of Life image!

Why the Tree of Life?

The Tree of Life is so much more than a beautiful image, it is more than a clever depiction of the scientific view of the mammary blood vessels. The Tree of Life is a mystical and magical symbol that has transcended time, cultures and religions. It is called by many names, but all with a similar symbolic significance, it is the source of life.

The roots are profoundly embedded within us, to deliver us the aptitude to give our children a piece of who we are. The trunk establishes a foundation, the connection between our children and us. Our bond is passionate, it is powerful. The branches reach out for sustenance, to provide nourishment from that thoughtful, unfathomable place within ourselves. With that, they are the fruit, the piece of us that we have given to the world. There is a further power that we bestow onto them, a sense of themselves. They have the freedom to be the bird fleetingly landing on that tree, so they may, one-day, place roots of their own.

Just like the Tree of Life, each photo holds a special meaning to the mother who created this bond. This mother laid the roots, built the trunk, spread her branches so her child may be given to the world.

Do you want to create your own Tree of Life image?

Here’s how!

 • Download the picsart app.
 • Google “transparent tree”, “transparent tree with roots”, “tree of roots” etc. choose a tree that you like and save the tree to your phone.
 • Upload the breastfeeding image that you would like to edit.
 • Scroll over to “add photo” on the bottom of the screen.
 • For an image with a white background, click “blend” then select “multiply”. If the background doesn’t remove, choose another image. For an image that is already transparent (which is ideal), click “blend” then “overlay”.
 • Manipulate your tree until it encompasses your breast and baby’s head. Make the image bigger, smaller, rotate, play until you get a look that you’re happy with.
 • You can edit and crop pieces of the tree with the eraser tool on the top of the screen.
 • When you are happy with the placement, now comes the magic!
 • Click the “magic” button and choose a filter that you like. You can use multiple filters by clicking apply and then returning back into the “magic” menu to choose another filter.

This New Bill Will Do Wonders

Remember when Alyssa Milano’s pumped breastmilk was seized at an airport screening checkpoint? (You can read the full article here) How about Rose Byrne’s encounter with the TSA? (watch the video here). What about all of the other moms who experienced harassment by TSA agents for bringing breastmilk through a checkpoint? (like Kate Champ’s and Vanessa Urango’s stories) Rest assured mamas, this wont be happening to you in the United States very soon, thanks to a new bill that won the full voice vote!

Breastfeeding World New Bill Acknowledges Breastmilk on Airplanes

Many nursing mothers have encountered issues while attempting to bring pumped breastmilk through TSA screening. While pumped breastmilk is already considered a “medically necessary liquid” and permitted through screening, and on flights as an exemption to the 100mL rule; there have been inconsistencies among agents with regard to these general policies. Unfortunately, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) does not train their agents unfailingly on the matter. Therefore, not all agents are complying with the guidance outlines. Government officials have decided it is time to step in.

Breastfeeding World New Bill Acknowledges Breastmilk on Airplanes

Bottles and Breastfeeding Equipment Screening Act

This new bill requires the Department of Homeland Security to ensure proper training of all airport personnel on feeding specific liquids and equipment for travelers with infants. Moreover, this bill gives parents the peace of mind when they travel with pumped breastmilk. The law is on your side! Now, the Bottles and Breastfeeding Equipment Screening Act is giving the TSA 90 days to ensure all airport personnel are properly trained on the already in place breastmilk policy.

In recent years, many airports have become aware of the need among nursing mothers for a space besides the restroom to breastfeed and pump. Airports across the United States have begun to offer lactation rooms and on-the-go lactation pods, like the Mamava lactation suites. Lactation rooms and pods, equipped with privacy, outlets, seating, and table space, are perfect for the travelling breastfeeding or pumping mother.

Check out this awesome resource detailing where you can find nursing stations in airports!

cuddlecot, breastfeeding world, Killian CuddleCotTime to Grieve; Placing a CuddleCot in Brooklyn’s Methodist Hospital

Last week, Breastfeeding World shared the Story of Wendy Cruz-Chan. Wendy is a mother whose son, Killian, was stillborn, and decided to pump and donate over 2,000 oz of breast milk to six different babies, in honor of her son. Her strength and perseverance didn’t end there. She also wanted certainty that other families who have gone through such a horrific experience are able to receive the gift of time, to say goodbye to their babies, gone too soon.

Her next goal is to raise enough money to get a CuddleCot in NY Methodist Hospital, and hopefully other hospitals, to honor the memory of her son, Killian.

The Inspiration for CuddleCotcuddlecot

Simon Rothwell, the Managing Director for Flexmort and Creator of the CuddleCot, said they are a UK based company. They manufacture a range of innovative mortuary cooling systems. For 2016, they won the Queens award for Innovation. Inspired and innovative is a wonderful way to describe this product designed by this former police officer.

15 years ago I used to be a Police Officer and had to take a family that had lost a baby down to the hospital mortuary in order for them to see the baby. This was a terrible way for them to grieve, and it stayed with me. Therefore, as a company we decided to look into the still birth area and saw that experts (Doctors, Psychologists and Baby Loss organisations) stated that families should be given the option of staying with their baby as long as they wished. This would help the bereavement process. However, in reality, the problem was the babies could deteriorate in warm hospital rooms. So many families aren’t getting the time they wanted. So we worked with hospitals and bereavement charities in the UK and designed the CuddleCot.

Virtually every hospital in the UK uses CuddleCots. There are hundreds in use around the world.

Wendy’s Story

After birth, my son Killian stillborn at 4:40am. The nurse informed me that I only have a maximum of 2 hours with him. After that, the staff would remove him. This is because his body would begin to “change” quickly at room temperature. Thus, spending less time with my baby. I did not have enough time to dress him, take professional pictures of him and have my family members to visit in the middle of the night. Two hours to spend together, to bond and grieve, is not enough time. Consequently, my husband and I suffered a very difficult and traumatic experience.

cuddle cot, infant loss, breastfeeding world, wendy cruz-chan, pregnancy and infant loss, october 15, brooklyn methodist hospital, stillborn

Then, I learned about the CuddleCot, a cooling system device which is placed in any basinet. It’s purpose is to keep the body cool while staying in the same room with the mother, for as long as she’s stays in the hospital. I became determined to have one placed in the hospital where I had my stillbirth, and hopefully other hospitals as well. I want to give future stillbirth families the gift of time with their baby. Time I’ve never had with Killian. With this, I hope that it would give them some proper closure in their hearts while they grieve.

The Cuddle Cot and Saying Good-Bye

The gift of time given to grieving families through the CuddleCot is invaluable. The ability to treasure the first and last moments with their child, to take pictures, study their features, say goodbye, is absolutely priceless to a grieving family. It is also critical in the healing process.

Deborah L. Davis, PHD, and developmental psychologist writes in Psychology Today about the CuddleCot. She states how important it is for a family to have time to grieve and bond with their child.

Parents can benefit from spending a prolonged period of time with their baby (link is external) after death. After childbirth, parents are psychologically and biologically primed to bond with and nurture their newborn. Even after a death, parents wanting to be with their baby is a natural expression of their postpartum drives and parental devotion. As a result, spending time with the baby’s body can offer a number of therapeutic benefits over the course of several days or longer.

breastfeeding World, black breastfeeding week,

Black Breastfeeding Week was created because for over 40 years there has been a gaping racial disparity in breastfeeding rates. The most recent CDC data show that 75% of white women have ever breastfed versus 58.9% of black women. The fact that racial disparity in initiation and even bigger one for duration has lingered for so long is reason enough to take 7 days to focus on the issue.” – BlackBreastfeedingweek.org

Breastfeeding World Celebrates Black Breastfeeding Week

In celebration of this amazing initiative Breastfeeding World will join efforts to educate women all over the world with informational posts about a variety of topics regarding breastfeeding, we will be featuring professionals from different cities around the USA who will have some great insights on the matter.

Breastfeeding can be challenging in many situations specially if you do not have the right support you need. Women have been discriminated and humiliated for breastfeeding their babies in public (many while wearing a nursing cover), nowadays many black breastfeeding moms aren’t able to accomplish their initial nursing goals of 3 months, they get lost in the process and with lack of encouragement they cannot go on.

Black and Breastfeeding, by Aimbriel Lasley

Aimbriel Lasley, Guest Blog Post, breastfeeding myths, breastfeeding world, breastfeeding support, breastfeeding information

Aimbriel is an Indiana native, wife and mother of four. She owns and operated Purely Maternal, LLC.

I would get the stares, the questions the “are you STILL breastfeeding” remarks not from strangers…but from family. I know a lot of moms get them no matter what but when you’re a black woman it can be painful. It can be painful because our black babies are dying at a higher rate than their counterparts and that our black breastfeeding rates continue to lag on a national scale. Breastfeeding is a normal nutritive response. Yet as black women, we receive misguidance. Sadly, we are frequently not empowered to continue or even pursue a breastfeeding journey with our children.

Why? Breastfeeding is how we can save our children. We save them by allowing them to thrive and be healthy, to combat illnesses later in life. Yet we are met with generational and societal barriers that continue to derail our efforts. I could go on- but instead I will leave some small tokens of encouragement for the mamas reading.

Breasts are for nurture. The belief that our breasts are sexual objects is false. Biologically, breasts are the key to life- the key to fulfillment and sustainment. Be brave! Doing things different is a good thing. At times, Black women do not see breastfeeding or know of anyone that has done so. Frequently, we receive ridicule for wanting to “break the cycle” or do things different. Be strong and make the best decision you can for you and your children. Breastfeeding is a way of life, not a fad. We are made for this! For all of the black mommies celebrating their accomplishments this week, I adore you. You set a goal, you stepped out on faith, you accomplished, you DID it.

Purely,

Aimbriel
