Our 5th annual Big Latch On in Times Square took place this past Saturday August 3rd during World Breastfeeding Week. It was probably one of the most amazing ones I've ever had.

About five years ago, the concept of showcasing how natural and beautiful breastfeeding is started. For a few weeks I went on and on, thinking how I could achieve this while still being able to share the different experiences that mothers had. That is when the Breastfeeding World photo project took place.

For approximately 2 months, I dedicated myself to capturing beautiful breastfeeding portraits. I had the opportunity of meeting over 60 New York City mothers who participated in the first photo call. We went to different iconic locations throughout New York City and photographed these beautiful women, nursing their little ones in public. It was epic!

Breastfeeding World was quickly becoming a resource of inspiration and support for our local moms. Yet, there was still so much to be done. In the beginning of July of 2015 one of our photo session participants and beloved friend, Lisa Maloney, had a crazy idea: “Let’s hold a Breastfeeding World Big Latch On in Times Square”, she said.

Sharing the Breastfeeding Love one event at a time

Breastfeeding World's first Big Latch On in Times Square. August 2015

With a month to prepare and a whole lot of sleepless nights, I was leading the Breastfeeding World’s team. We planned and executed one of the most iconic Big Latch On events that have ever happened: 69 nursing mothers came together in Times Square to breastfeed their little ones in support.

This was the beginning of five full years of annual breastfeeding events. We took our celebrations from NYC to several other states, including two countries: Guam and Ecuador.

Our Breastfeeding Celebrations have gathered strong women who have gotten the opportunity to meet like-minded families, and support each other’s journeys. Strong friendships have developed. But most importantly, a sense of empowerment has surrounded each and every one of our events.

Back in 2016, I had to relocate to Massachusetts. Although organizing these events seemed impossible, we pulled it off each and every year. Thanks to our Breastfeeding World Volunteers our events took form and place. Our focus has always remained the same: to bring our mothering community together. Supporting and encouraging each other in our breastfeeding journeys has been one of our main goals.

Breastfeeding World – a community of love

These past two years have been a real challenge for Breastfeeding World. As the leader, I have encountered a few personal “blocks” along the way. Making it difficult to keep up.

In 2017 a professional development opportunity arose, and I took it. I was promoted to department supervisor in the local hospital I work at. To say that juggling motherhood, school activities, being a full-time working mom, managing Breastfeeding World and the overall ups and downs of life has been difficult, is a BIG understatement!

In 2018, Breastfeeding World underwent a few transitions: a shift in its volunteer team, a website re-design as well as the expansion of our events to Guam & Ecuador. It was not easy, but we did it.

Then this year came…

As much as I love Breastfeeding World and all that it stands for, I was overwhelmed with having to juggle all of the responsibilities I already had. I made up my mind that there was no way our annual breastfeeding celebration would happen this year. It was not until my dear friend Lisa Maloney, and my fellow BFW co-founders, brother Christian and mother Bella Garcia called me that I started re-thinking it.

Lisa reminded me that we are all humans, as mothers we can only do so much. She also reminded me of all the beautiful reasons why Breastfeeding World has significantly grown. As well as all the help and support it has provided to so many around the world. Instead of judging me for feeling overwhelmed and somewhat powerless, she embraced me with encouragement.

"Your eyes gleam with excitement when you talk about the BFW events," said another friend of mine.

After this small intervention of love and deep understanding, I came to the realization that our Breastfeeding World celebrations needed to happen. Not because of me, but because of the lives that it would impact. Even my sweet baby girl (who’s not a baby anymore) said: “Mami, I can’t wait to work in our BFW event”.

Just like five years ago: with a little over a month to go, I started promoting the event. With non payed 2019 sponsors, very limited financial resources, but a whole lot of willingness and love, my family and I traveled from Massachusetts to NYC for our…

To some, this year’s event might’ve been way smaller and a whole lot different from previous years. For me, this year’s event was one of the most powerful ones yet. Despite the challenges faced, I was once again able to touch the lives of the amazing NYC mothers that attended our 5th annual Big Latch On in Times Square.

This event was intimate. It was beautiful, and extremely empowering. Our 5th annual Big Latch On in Times Square was a true demonstration of love and commitment. It reminded me that Breastfeeding World is a community of love and real appreciation for one another.

I was excited seeing some old faces that have grown with us. But it was also very fun getting to know new mommies and daddies who were thrilled to be a part of something so big, yet small at the same time. Babies as little as 10 days old came to celebrate with us this unique event. It was so refreshing seeing 2 & 3 year old nurslings who were more than happy to be having their "milkies, tities, tatas".

An event to remember, an event to cherish

"Meeting in Times Square to breastfeed with all the other moms that traveled from near and far, was such an inspiring event. We all had separate challenges but we pushed through them making it to that moment on the TKTS stairs to nourish our little ones. Getting the opportunity to nurse together made me a little emotional as I connected with other moms and we discussed our experiences. I left feeling empowered, understood and supported.” – Susie Davies Concelmo, 2019 NYC BLO participant.

"It was a beautiful gathering! To see so many women immediately able to strike up conversations, to have so many content babies and children all gathered together is a statement to how natural and nurturing the breastfeeding journey is.” – Cassandra Addams, 2019 NYC BLO participant.

"This was my second year coming out. It was wonderful to meet with familiar and new faces. There’s just something about being with other women, (and men!), taking pride and standing firm in breastfeeding. It creates this great space of empowerment and resolve you can take home with you to use to continue to dispel stigma and pressure to not publicly breastfeed.

It was great to be in that energy. All of the dads got to bond and feel pride in the breastfeeding journey and their important involvement as supporters, and well, as dads! We got to see other families with older tots and kids too. Seeing a generation of breastfed kiddies growing up and flourishing was heartwarming and inspirational.

This is the kind of event that really showcases how breastfeeding isn’t an isolated thing. On the contrary, it's something that involves and positively affects the whole family because it positively affects the children.” – Teena Botan, 2019 NYC BLO participant.

My deepest gratitude to you all

Breastfeeding World began after I became a mother to my beautiful baby girl. It began after I was told: “we don’t do ‘THAT’ in here,” while shopping in a children’s clothing store in the UWS. It began after I felt powerless and disoriented by the double standards surrounding a women’s body. It began after I felt the need to be the voice of many through my photography. It began because of each and every one of you, so, THANK YOU.

Our breastfeeding journey lasted 4.5 years, it was not easy but it was worth it! - ©Alegares Photography

Throughout these past five years, Breastfeeding World has given me a reason to keep on going and pushing forward despite the many obstacles. Although my daughter and I stopped breastfeeding at 4.5 years, I feel that my “nursing relationship” with BFW is still going on (if you know what I mean!). That strong bond and connection we share, grows deeper every day. Despite my imperfections as its “mother,” I feel that BFW has been able to thrive because of you.

Our commitment to empowering women around the world is what keeps us going day to day. Breastfeeding World will continue moving forward and just like our individual motherhood journeys. We will continue sharing the breastfeeding love one day at a time. So, hold on tight! Are you ready for our epic ride?

I would LOVE to hear your thoughts. What would you like to see more of in the future from Breastfeeding World? Please share them in the comment section below!.

Don't forget! Check out our social media pages to keep up with the breastfeeding love.

If you participated in the event and would like to see more pictures please register to view our gallery. You may purchase images directly through the site, thank you for supporting Breastfeeding World.

Summer, oh summer! It’s certainly one of the best seasons of the year but it’s also one of the busiest as well. Specially if you happen to live on the beautiful island of Martha’s Vineyard.

This year Breastfeeding World hosted its third annual Martha’s Vineyard Big Latch On and boy was it a good one. Back on August 5th, 16 Martha’s Vineyard breastfeeding moms came together once again to make this event a great one.

Some new faces and some returning mothers who year by year make these events well worth it.

One of the special things I love about our Martha’s Vineyard Latch On is how intimate and empowering it always is. I’ve been able to see how these mamas and babes grow in their journeys and this year I had the opportunity to photograph the same ladies I met back in 2015 when we held our very first Breastfeeding World photo session on the island.

This time around, they came with their new babes and a full-term nursling. (Kudos to Sarah and Mili, you make us proud!).

The beauty of breastfeeding and motherhood is that each journey is completely different and unique in its own way. Not only from mother to mother but from baby to baby as well. No matter how many books you may read or how many classes you may attend to, by the time that the baby comes you might be very informed as to what is about to happen but, are you really ready? Probably not.

During this year’s Martha’s Vineyard Big Latch On a momma told me she wasn’t sure whether or not I would continue on with the events due to me not nursing anymore… Let me take the chance and tell you all a short version of my story, the one probably none of you know….

My sweet mini-me was born on this gorgeous island, surrounded by beautiful landscapes that make this location THE place to be during summer.  My experience with giving birth was astounding, I went in not feeling prepared but my birthing team at the Hospital was amazing.

I was very fortunate, although my baby’s father was not present and I was/am a single momma, I had more than what I had wished for: I had my mother and my sister next to me, they were part of my unmedicated natural birth and everything that came thereafter.

I can assure you that without them my breastfeeding journey would’ve only been a few weeks affair.

My mother Bella and my sister Shelyn, two breastfeeding veterans with 8 children altogether knew exactly what to do in my moments of despair. With tears in my eyes I recall one time begging them to take my baby away because the pain of nursing and cracked nipples was unbearable. (Can you relate?)

Mom would cook all the healthy foods that my body needed to recover while Shelyn would help me take care of the baby. My mama would pass on some old wives’ tales from Ecuador while teaching me some great breastfeeding techniques and some massages to relief engorgement and potential clogged ducts.

With their support I made it past the challenging first three weeks of breastfeeding. Tears flowing down my face on several occasions but they never let me quit when I wanted to.

Our next milestone was 6 months, we made it. One full year, we made it. Eighteen months, we made it. Two years, we made it… until we kind of stopped keeping track.

My sweet mini-me nursed for 4 ½ years and weaned off earlier this year. Was it a bumpy ride? HELL YASS! Was it worth it? Every minute of it.

Today, as we lay down to sleep, (we bedshare baby!) there are nights where she turns looking for her ‘tities’. She knows that no milk comes out but she feels safe and that’s all that matters.

Did I encounter criticism for nursing beyond 2 years? Yes. Was it uncomfortable? At times, yes. Did it matter at the end? No. My baby has grown to be a sweet child who is happy and smiles quite often, she knows that mommy works so hard on Breastfeeding World and she loves helping me every way she can.

To you my sweet mama, who wasn’t sure the events would continue because I stopped nursing… Oh YES they will!

Little mini-me was who inspired me to start Breastfeeding World in the first place, our journey through breastfeeding and motherhood in general is what kept me going. Getting to know women who identified with each other in many ways was my fuel to push through.

Although we stopped nursing this year there are thousands of new mothers (and existing ones) that are going through their breastfeeding & motherhood journeys and they Need. Us.

Breastfeeding World is bigger than my baby and I because now, all of you are part of its history as well as its success.

The Martha’s Vineyard Big Latch On is all about celebrating you, strong women and mothers who lift each other up. No matter in what phase of your motherhood journey you may be in, at some point you will need the support system that I thankfully had and that is what we aim to be for you all: the encouraging voice that pushes you through all the obstacles.

Let us all celebrate these amazing Martha’s Vineyard Breastfeeding Moms, you are amazing!

On August 5, over 180 mothers and 480 Breastfeeding supporters gathered to nurse their babies, discover resources, and finally, celebrate!

Families came from all over for Central Indiana’s Breastfeeding World 2017 Big Latch On in Central Indiana.

Why a huge event, about something so simple as feeding a child? Breastfeeding moms, feeding babies? What’s the big deal?

Because, even though breastfeeding is natural, it isn’t always simple. And even though motherhood is beautiful, it is also challenging. And messy. And even a little lonely. So yes, the latch, the bond, the breastfeeding, it’s why we gather. It’s why we support one other. But Breastfeeding World’s 2017 Big Latch On Events are more than that. These breastfeeding celebrations are about Unity. Here, we discover we are not alone in our breastfeeding journeys. Together, we are uniting in Motherhood.

After all, our children are the reasons we began this journey to begin with.

I love that once I arrived, my sense of loneliness went away. I felt empowered and supported. My family and my husband love that I breastfeed, but none of them support me nursing wherever, whenever.

I loved that I could feed my former NICU baby without fear of being ridiculed for not finding a bathroom or backseat of a hot uncomfortable car. It felt normal. I felt normal, like how it should feel. Just a regular mom, going about her normal business feeding her baby the “normal” way.” -Jessica Down

Here is the 2017 Big Latch On Final Count!

Central Indiana’s 2107 Big Latch On isn’t the only location working to build community support for breastfeeding. Not only did Breastfeeding World proudly host coast-to-coast Latch On’s. Families joined together in  Martha’s Vineyard, NYC, Central Indiana, and Downtown Seattle. These Breastfeeding World organized events culminated to almost 300 Latches, and over 1000 breastfeeding supporters. Yet, we were part of an even larger movement.

This year The Global Big Latch On registered 725 locations across 23 countries. The final count numbers ended with:

17,790 children breastfeeding during the one-minute count

18,036 breastfeeding women attended

What an amazing feeling, to sit among so many moms in your community, feeding your babies. Then adding to that feeling, knowing that you are joining in unity with families from all over the world! You can find out more about this year’s global events here.

Impacting our Community

I didn’t know why at first, but I drove home with tears. Mainly because I was so proud to be apart of something like this, considering my breastfeeding journey. It was so very difficult in the start. I felt comfortable after a big even though I came alone! I didn’t win any raffles, but I was a part of something bigger than any gift. Cassidy and I have survived almost 6 months of this journey together and I got to share that with 180+ other mothers.” -Andrea Kernodle-McCauley

The Bubbles were Awesome! They kept my kids (an myself) entertained so I could listen to the names being called for the raffle. Best thing of all would be just being surrounded by so many other breastfeeding mamas. Feeling 100% comfortable and safe to nurse my toddler. To be a part of something like that means so much to me. “It was incredibly laid back which is the way breastfeeding in public should be! I sat between two women during the latch. The woman to my right had breastfed for 9 years. The woman to my left was breastfeeding in public for the first time. So many women, so many stories. Simply put… it was amazing. My heart smiles every time I think about it. I really appreciated the entertainment for the kiddos! And the amber necklace was the best swag!” – Marcy Brittingham

Sam, Laranda, Alexia, and Lisa- this project has been so much more than about breastfeeding to me. Your friendship and love, along with the empowerment I have felt through these months and months of planning, have helped shape me. To be a better mom. A more connected friend. And perhaps most importantly, a stronger woman than I knew I was. What an amazing feeling to discover; that in empowering other moms, we find ourselves empowered. You ladies are my world, and I adore each of you.

This past August 4th Breastfeeding World celebrated its Second Annual Big Latch On on Martha’s Vineyard.

Thanks to the wonderful participation of our community members we were able to beat our 2016 record by having 21 nursing mothers join us in the synchronized latch on at 10:30 am as well as a total of 60 attendees.

Months of planning and organizing brought yet another successful event to our island community with our goal of promoting but most importantly supporting our local breastfeeding moms.

Each year Breastfeeding World works hard to be able to bring breastfeeding awareness and support through our web portal, our photography project as well as our successful events. With out teams of volunteers we strive to give back to our local communities by giving them the opportunity to enjoy a day to celebrate breastfeeding, to share their experiences and to meet other mommies that are going through the same.

“My favorite part was meeting so many amazing moms, hearing their stories and being able to breastfeed comfortably with no judgment.” – said Jessica Mawjeski  a 2017 MV Attendee.

The best part of our events is that we not only integrate our moms and dads but also other family members. A good support system for a nursing mother is extremely important for her success, specially during the first few months after giving birth.

Enjoying it for the second year in a row….

This year we were extremely happy seeing familiar faces that had previously participated in our Latch On last year, we had seven nursing moms that came back this 2017 to participate with their now toddlers. What gave us more satisfaction was knowing that many of them were continuing with their extended breastfeeding journey.

“So wonderful to be part of this gathering again! I loved seeing the mothers and kiddos I met last year as well as made some new friends.” – Elizabeth Bonifacio ’16 &’17 MV Participant.

Breastfeeding into toddlerhood can bring its own set of challenges and if your family has grown then it can be even harder but definitely not impossible. A lot of people truly think that once the baby hits the first year mark there is no reason to continue nursing but the reality is that extended breastfeeding continues to provide your baby with enhanced nutrition, it helps boosts their immune system and brain development and it is also soothing and calming for both moms and their little ones.

“Thank you so much for a wonderful event! It was great to see everyone that participated in the past and meet some new moms and babes. I appreciate the empowerment each and every women shares with me just by being together.” – Sarah Mattson 2016 & 2017 MV Participant.

We couldn’t have done it alone…

Breastfeeding World started as a self funded photography project back in 2014 by our founder Alexia Garcia, it quickly became an online community that offers support to moms around the world and it’s still being self funded.

For our Coast to Coast Big Latch On events this year we were able to partner with some amazing companies and small business that made these events not only possible but extremely successful.

We would like to thank our MV Gold Contributors once again:

“So happy to have shared today with you. It was such an amazing experience to share the day with so many different moms from so many different backgrounds and everyone just getting along. There was no judgment, no sneers, not a single negative aspect of the entire event. I know I didn’t talk to many people but it was still an amazing experience to share.” – said Lee Jaime Lutke 2017 MV participant.

Making History, One Event at a Time

We are so pleased to introduce Breastfeeding World’s first ever Downtown Seattle Big Latch On! For the first time, the volunteers and passionate mamas at Breastfeeding World can’t believe we get to host Big Latch On events from Coast to Coast. Starting from intimate Martha’s Vineyard, to iconic Times Square, to sprawling Central Indiana, and now Seattle! Our project is expanding our reach to communities across the USA.Together, we can empower breastfeeding families in each area!

As nursing moms ourselves, we know, motherhood is HARD. Breastfeeding is HARD. And just like motherhood, breastfeeding is worth it. That is why we strive to “share the breastfeeding love”. We do this through social media, our blog, our photography project, and by hosting Big Latch On events across the USA.

The Latch

The Global Big Latch On takes place at registered locations around the world, where women gather together to breastfeed and offer peer support to each other. Their friends, family and community join this celebration to promote and support breastfeeding. Volunteers from within the community host each location, hosting a Global Big Latch On creates a lasting support network for the community.

What to expect at a Global Big Latch On location?

There’s usually a little bit of beautiful chaos, lots of laughter and then some counting. We do have some records to break, which is why we need your help. We count the number of children breastfeeding at the same time (the latch count), how many breastfeeding women gathered and the total number of people who come out to show their support, so bring as
many friends and family members as you can.
At around 10.30am we count all the breastfeeding that is happening. It’s a latch on, so a child’s mouth around a breastfeeding woman’s nipple counts. If you are breastfeeding
twins or triplets (or more!) counts 2/ 3 even if they are not all breastfeeding at the same time. We figure that’s fair enough! Remember no one checks for milk transfer, children do not have to stay latched for the whole time and all ages are very welcome.
We recognize that everyone’s breastfeeding journey looks different and we want the Global Big Latch On to be as fun and inclusive as possible, while still reaching our aims of positively supporting breastfeeding in public and making it a normal part of day to day life. You can be included in the latch count by latching a child or children; using an supplemental nursing system or nipple shield; expressing milk (hand or pump) or by feeding your child breast milk via an alternative method.

Kindred Bravely

Kindred Bravely, Breastfeeding World's Big Latch On Contributor, nursing bra review

Read our Review of their line, here!

As a nursing mom, Deeanne Akerson struggled to find comfortable clothes that were both functional and stylish. “Everything fell into one of two categories: pretty but hopelessly impractical or super ugly but functional.” Since necessity really is the mother of invention, Deeanne got to work designing her own line of maternity and nursing clothes. Her brainchild, Kindred Bravely, devotes itself to making life easier for pregnant and nursing moms.

Perhaps more important than her clothing is Deeanne’s mission to build a community of moms who support and celebrate each other. In fact, she chose the name Kindred Bravely to represent sisterhood of moms and the courage it takes to raise a child. “As moms, we’ve got to stick together. We’re family now. We have the same struggles and the same desires.”

Behind the scenes, Kindred Bravely employees, most of them work-at-home-moms, help share Deeanne’s mission and values: be grateful, be generous, be brave, be encouraging. Along with delivering top-of-the-line clothing, the “Kindred BraveMoms” provide incredible customer service, share quality content, and engage with social media communities.

Normalizing breastfeeding is very important to me, but I was going about it the wrong way. Why did I decide to let my inner warrior go? I’d like to share my story with you.

I’ll admit, when it comes to dealing with life’s challenges, I have always been more of a furied fighter than a patient yogi. If I have a vision I go for it. Quickly.

But when my husband and I found out we were expecting our first child, the warrior in me relaxed. I took off my armour and settled into my safe place.

Even in the womb, I could feel how this baby was shifting my priorities.

I was shifting away from “not gonna let anyone stop me,” and towards, “appreciate this moment before it’s gone.”

It’s amazing how new life creates new ways of looking at life.

Then the baby arrived.

And I was caught totally off guard by a battle I never expected. My sword and shield were packed away in a closet so when the first shot flew at me I was shocked.

“Your baby won’t get enough nourishment if you breastfeed like that.”

Huh?

I slowly lifted my head up from my newfound mindfulness.

“It’s really unsafe to sleep with your baby.”

What? Another one?

“If you breastfeed too much your baby will be spoiled.”

Yikes. This was really happening.

Then, on the news, “Woman accused of indecent exposure for breastfeeding her baby in public.”

That’s it.

Forget mindfulness.

The warrior in me was back.

Every time I went out with my baby, my eyes darted around like a cat sensing danger, ready to retaliate if necessary.

On an airplane, I saw a woman nursing with a cover. I wondered why. Who would say something if she took it off? I was ready to defend her. And breastfeeding.

I learned about the other warrior mothers out there, just trying to raise and feed their babies the way they choose. Court cases, pumping laws, talk show hosts who tell their viewers to “be discrete.”

warrior mother breastfeeding world

“Breastfeed Wherever You Want.” The ad for a Latch On that was held in Rome this past May.

I learned that this battle is so big that women need to join forces in Latch Ons around the globe, just to get the message out there that this. is. normal.

To learn about Breastfeeding World’s Big Latch Ons that will take place on August 4th and 5th, 2017, visit our home page.

I live in Italy and I can tell you that the struggle is real here, too. The ad for a Latch On in Rome shows a breastfeeding mother with the ultimate warrior look.  And here’s a video of a Latch On in Bologna.

Like all these mothers I was reading about and getting to know at La Leche League meetings, I was on a mission. The mission was to normalize breastfeeding. To educate. To defend my choices in motherhood.

I memorized my breastfeeding rights in case anyone challenged me.

I didn’t buy a nursing cover.

The pediatrician told me that my child was “too dependent” on me and I flipped out.

warrior mother breastfeeding world

Back off, people!

So I started firing back. I was waving my sword around like a mad woman.

I preached the benefits of breastfeeding to whomever would listen (especially pregnant women). And I was ready to attack whoever challenged the bond, the antibodies, the right to feed my baby the way I wanted to.

I had to win. Yet, I was so confused as to why this was even an issue.

And then.

It was quiet.

In part because I ran out of ammunition. In part because I realized that I was firing randomly and “the enemy” was actually not on the battlefield.

I thought that there were a bunch of people out to get me. Out to change me.

But really there was just an absence of knowledge and experience.

In so many families, breastfeeding is not normal. Many pediatricians are not trained in the physiology of breastfeeding.

But no one is out to get me, really. A lot of people just don’t know. They don’t know what a gift this is.

They don’t know that giving my milk to my babies, like pregnancy and giving birth, is like pure magic.

I put down my sword and shield.

And I picked up my baby.

I unfurrowed my brow.

And shifted my focus.

There is no war. Only ignorance. I can’t fight ignorance.

I can educate, but I can’t force that either.

All I can do is breastfeed my babies, with a smile, knowing that I am doing what’s right and good for us.

The critics will come and go, and I’ll hear their words. But their words won’t hurt me, because I know that they are coming from a place of “unknowing.”

People can sense if you are living your life with calm resolution. The naysayers will have less and less to say if they realize that this, for me, is a non-issue.

warrior mother breastfeeding world

I’m just going about my business, breastfeeding or not, pacifier or not, co-sleeping or not, when I want, where I want, how I want.

I’m still a warrior at heart, and living in the moment is still something that I have to consciously choose, but at least I have left this battle behind.

With the Third Annual Times Square NYC Big Latch On approaching, I applaud all of you mothers who proudly breastfeed, showing the world what is normal, natural, not always easy, but magical.

We can make this normal again. And there doesn’t need to be a battle. Just a bunch of mothers breastfeeding will do. With a smile. In peace. Together.

What about you? How do you normalize breastfeeding? Please share your experiences with us in the comments below. It would make my day.

Back in 2015 when dear friend and dream team member Lisa Maloney came to me with the idea of organizing our very first Big Latch On together in Times Square I had no idea this would turn into such a beautiful journey that would extend itself to two other communities.

Over 700 attendees later in our tri-state events, It is my pleasure to announce that Breastfeeding World will be holding it’s second annual breastfeeding celebration & Big Latch On on the beautiful island of Martha’s Vineyard this upcoming Friday August 4th.

For those who might be asking, what is the Big Latch On?

It’s an event that takes place at registered locations around the world, women gather together to breastfeed and offer peer support to each other. It aims to strengthen national and global support for nursing mothers and their children.

Moms around the globe come together in groups, large and small, and nurse their little ones for a synchronized session that lasts one minute starting at exactly 10:30 am. You can learn more about the global event here.

Remembering Martha’s Vineyard’s First Latch On…

On 2016 we had sixteen nursing mothers who joined us and our supporters in celebrating breastfeeding by coming together for the Global Big Latch On on the island. This event was part of Breastfeeding World’s initiative to bring these types of amazing family gatherings to smaller communities to create awareness and build stronger friendships between our moms.

In between laughter, excitement and a whole lot of cute little faces and baby toes the moms that attended last year expressed that they felt empowered, they felt united but most importantly they felt a part of something big.

We are truly excited at the prospect of choosing this year’s location soon. You see, I started Breastfeeding World as a photography project to showcase the beauty of breastfeeding and the importance of being able to do nurse in public as well. Iconic outdoor locations for our events have always been an important aspect to us and choosing the right one on this lovely island is truly a hard decision because Martha’s Vineyard has beautiful scenery no matter where you go.

Contribute to this year’s accomplishments

Breastfeeding World started as a self funded photography project and it slowly developed into a growing online community of like-minded families. It now relies on the superb team of volunteers that have joined me in making this dream come true.

To this date we are still self funded but as a team we work hard to be able to bring these events to the communities we love. We have decided that this year once again we would love to give our local businesses the chance to collaborate with us by joining our team of contributors.

If you are a business owner on Martha’s Vineyard that would like to contribute to our cause while getting promoted within our beautiful community of new mothers and families, please fill in the form below so we can chat more about it.

It is exciting for us to see how each year our number of participants and supporters increase, this means that our efforts and hard work are paying off because our message of “Sharing the breastfeeding love” is truly spreading around. Because of this we are open to get as many help as possible, if you are a breastfeeding supporter and would like to volunteer during our event please fill in this form and our volunteer coordinator will get you going.

On August 5th, 2017, at exactly 10am, mothers and babies (and/or their pumps) will gather on the red steps in Times Square, New York City. In that moment, we will unite as one with thousands of mothers across the World to Normalize Breastfeeding.

What is the Global Big Latch On?

Global Big Latch On events take place at registered locations around the world, where women gather together to breastfeed and offer peer support to each other. Their friends, family and community join this celebration to promote and support breastfeeding. Last year, over 200 mothers and babies gathered on the steps of the Hamilton County Judicial Building and fed their babies, thus participating in Central Indiana’s Big Latch On

This year, for 2017, Breastfeeding World is doing it again with Central Indiana’s Big Latch On! With the help of our volunteers, sponsors, and donors, we are “Spreading the Breastfeeding Love” in Central Indiana by hosting our Second Annual Big Latch On and Community event!

On August 5, 2017, at exactly 10:30am, mothers and babies (and/or their pumps) will gather on the steps of the West Lawn of the Judicial Building in Noblesville Indiana. Together, you will unite with mothers across the World in nursing our babies for one whole minute.

Breastfeeding World's Big Latch On 2017, Central Indiana's Big Latch On,

What is the Global Big Latch On?

It’s a latch on, so a child’s mouth around a breastfeeding womans’ nipple counts.

Find out more on their website!

Breastfeeding World’s Big Latch On Community Events

Last year was Breastfeeding World’s first year organizing Tri-state Level Events. We hosted Latch On’s at Times Square in NYC, Martha’s Vineyard, and of course here, in Hamilton County. Together, we celebrated breastfeeding within our unique communities.

Check out our promotional video from last year, made by our founder, Alexia Garcia of Alegares Photography:

What can you expect from this years Central Indiana’s Big Latch On?

First, upon arrival, check in for Nursing Mama’s begins at 9:15, with the Latch itself beginning at exactly 10:00am. Make sure you give yourself plenty of time to find parking! The county told us we are welcome to use the employee lot south of SR 32. There will also be an art fair going on downtown on the Square, not to mention the Farmer’s Market a few blocks away, so don’t get those confused with the Latch and picnic! Central Indiana’s Big Latch On & Family Picnic will take place on the West Lawn of the Judicial Center- this is behind the official courthouse building.

But don’t leave after the Latch On, because the fun is only just getting started at Central Indiana’s Big Latch On & Family Picnic

As every mother who has ever put a babe to the breast knows, Breastfeeding isn’t always just about the latch. The same goes with our event- it’s not only about the latch here either! It’s about self-care. Finding Support. Discovering our village. And the Free Stuff.

OK, so the free stuff has nothing to do with breastfeeding, but it does have to do with our event! Our supportive sponsors generously donated incredible Raffle items or our participants and their families. Every pre-registered pregnant or nursing mother will receive a free ticket along with a swag bag, filled with amazing goodies (Like sunscreen samples from Goddess Gardens, Tubby Todd Baby Wash, an organic bamboo nursing pad package from Kindred Bravely, Mary Kay Samples, and an Amber Teething Necklace from Baltic Essentials)from our sponsors.

Along with your free raffle ticket, you may earn them by participating in games on our event page, speaking with our advocates, or you may purchase extra tickets at $1 each. Proceeds from our raffle baskets will divide between next year’s Big Latch On, and towards supporting moms in our community with the Indy Chapter of Breastfeeding USA.

Recently, a post about Lactavism from Kristen at Motherwise popped up in my Facebook timeline from a few years ago.

Lactavism comes in different forms and words. And Lactavism may mean different things to different people. However, Lactavists all have the same goal. We want to show the world that breastfeeding is normal. And mothers, who join together, have the power to do  it. Kristen said,

Have y’all been keeping up on the recent Nursing In Public controversy? The Concord Mall in Wilmington, DE harassed a mother for breastfeeding in a Hollister store. Local women started commenting on the mall’s Facebook page, calling them out on it. Whoever was running their Facebook page literally said, “It was an eyesore.” And then ALSO said, “Hope you guys don’t mind if I suck my wife’s breasts in public.”

For real. Literally said that. It’s sad and frustrating and highly disturbing that people respond this way to the act of feeding a child. But it’s also really funny to me that companies think they can do this and experience no repercussions.

Breastfeeding moms are a force to be reckoned with. Corporations and businesses keep making the mistake of thinking they can harass and degrade us, breaking the laws that protect our rights to nurse in public, and there will somehow be no consequences.

Naw. Not happening. You will not shame us. You will not control us. We will feed our babies wherever we go. We will feed them as covered or as open as we prefer. We will NOT go hide in a disgusting bathroom. We have the right to nurse in public; you do NOT have the right to harass us.

If you do harass us, we will flood your Facebook page with negative attention and possibly make national news. We will organize nurse-ins at your stores nationwide to protest your ignorance. And thus far, almost every time, you will end up issuing an apology and updating your employees on breastfeeding mothers’ rights.

Breastfeeding Mothers are Powerful

Lactavism, nurse in, nyc nurse in, today show, breastfeeding pictures, brelfie, alegares photography, breast is best, nyc breastfeeding world project, nurse in at the today showLadies, we have so much POWER when we join together as a collective movement. Look here at what we did at the amazing, peaceful Women’s Marches all over the WORLD! Businesses, media, and individuals should quiver in fear of the collective force of women with a goal- particularly a goal oriented around the well being of their children, such as lactavism. Look at the nurse-in which was organized when Katy Lee and Hoda disparaged breastfeeding in public on the Today Show! According to the Department of Labor, 57% of women in the United States participate in the workforce. Of that,  70% of those women have children under the age of 18.  Mother’s are everywhere, and when we join together, we have a strong voice.

Lactavism is not about being a “Boob Nazi”

Normalizing Breastfeeding is not about shoving our boobs in everyone’s faces. There are all types of breastfeeding moms. Just as there are all types of moms. We are not all the same. Lactavism is about creating a safe place for mother’s to feed their children. Without “Butter’s” and judgments.

lactavism, latch on, 300 breastfeeding supporters took over Times Square, breastfeeding world big latch on, women breastfeeding in times square, times square, breastfeeding in times square, moms take over times square, breastfeeding world, big latch on nyc, nyc big latch on

That’s it. Organizations such as the La Leche League have garnered a reputation of being “Boob Nazi’s” over time. But it isn’t further from the truth of what lactavism tries to do.  Whether you and your child prefer to nurse under a cover, or in a quiet corner, or in the middle of Times Square, it should always be because Breastfeeding should be a choice made between a mother and her child. No one else.

However, in order to create that sense of normalcy, breastfeeding mothers need to unite together. We need to take brelfie’s, attend latch-on’s, share articles and blog posts. We need to let other mothers know they are not alone in their breastfeeding journey.

After all, to quote Laurel Thatcher Ulrich, “Well-behaved women seldom make history.”

So let’s impact our world, and our children’s future, together.

Yes, we are doing it again!

It pleases me to announce that this year Breastfeeding World will be uniting efforts once again with the Global Latch On and we will be hosting our Second Annual NYC Big Latch On!

This year Alexia Garcia (Founder of the Breastfeeding World community & photo project) will once again be working with her amazing friend and fellow dreamer Lisa Maloney  (volunteer coordinator for Breastfeeding World events) as well as the rest of the Breastfeeding World’s team: Samantha Sykula (BFW Editor) and Christian Garcia  to ensure we bring you the best peer-to-peer event possible in New York City.

Breastfeeding world, breastfeeding, big latch on, breastfeeding worlds big latch on, nyc big latch on, nyc big latch, global big latch on, big latch on

On 2015 with only one month of planning we managed to have a great success in our first iconic NYC Big Latch On.  We gathered 76 nursing moms and over 100 breastfeeding supporters who came together to celebrate breastfeeding in none other than the traditional Times Square.

The Global Big Latch On takes place annually over two days during World Breastfeeding Week (1st – 7th August). As a worldwide peer support and community development event, it aims to strengthen national and global support for breastfeeding and to improve the health of children and women around the world. The first year it took place was in 2010, two countries participated in it and had 2,045 babies latched. On 2015, 28 countries participated and together we managed to break the record having 14,889 babies latched.

How does the Big Latch work?

It’s pretty simple and so much fun. At 10:30 am local time women all around the world simultaneously nurse their little ones for one whole minute aiming to help promote breastfeeding around the world.

Breastfeeding world, breastfeeding, big latch on, breastfeeding worlds big latch on, nyc big latch on, nyc big latch, global big latch on

Why did Breastfeeding World choose to stay in Times Square?

Two very simple reasons…

  • Times Square is the heart of NYC, the heart of the Big Apple. Last year, our NYC moms took over Times Square and they loved it. We decided we couldn’t take our iconic  and historic event and “after coffee” (you’ll know more about that soon) away from the city. So get ready because this year we will be momentous! Together we will be making a difference in our community.
  • Breastfeeding World is not affiliated with any political entity. We kindly thank all the efforts that Borough Hall presidents have done to help promote and normalize breastfeeding but we prefer to keep our event politics-free. Our goal is to serve our community of mothers by educating, offering support and creating an atmosphere where they can all feel welcomed and cared for. Breastfeeding World is an initiative that has quickly developed into an online community, from moms to moms and we wish to keep it that way.

I’d love to join and be apart of Breastfeeding World’s second annual NYC Big Latch On, how can I do it?

First thing you need to know: you DON’t need to be a breastfeeding mom to be able to join us, if you are a breastfeeding supporter then we want you with us too!

You can be a part of this year’s iconic event by participating in the actual latch or by being part of our amazing volunteer group.

Nursing mama? You can register to be a NYC Big Latch On participant HERE and make sure you mark it on your calendars!

Volunteer? You can sign up to be a part of the Breastfeeding World volunteer team for this 2016  NYC Big Latch On and help us make a difference in our community HERE.

Important Disclaimer: On April 1st on our Facebook Page we announced we were working with Lisa Maloney and our volunteer from last years event, Kiki Valentine, organizing the Brooklyn Big Latch On. Kiki has parted ways from the Breastfeeding World’s group of volunteers and we wish her all the very best, we loved working with Kiki and will be missing her dearly but we are super happy to have inspired her to have her own event. Breastfeeding World is no longer participating nor affiliated in any way with the Brooklyn Big Latch On nor with Brooklyn’s Borough Hall. We wish them the very best!

That wonderful moment has finally arrived and your baby is nestled safely in your arms after spending nearly a year growing inside of you. Your body has stretched and grown right along with your bundle of joy, and may be soft and unrecognizable now that you are no longer pregnant. Whether you invested a lot of money into maternity clothes or not, you may be wondering what your style will look like now that you are a Mother. Breastfeeding Mothers also have to consider finding clothing styles that accommodate their new lifestyle.

Fashion is something that is easily overlooked in the days, weeks, and if you’re anything like me, months after having a baby. I felt frumpy and messy for the first few months and it seemed like I was topless AND covered in milk 24/7. I mainly wore my old maternity clothes, which didn’t make me feel very good about myself. When I started venturing outside, my daughter was around two months old, and I needed clothes that made breastfeeding in public easier, while also making me feel better about my new body. After searching my local mall from top to bottom, I realized there aren’t very many stores that carry clothing that is specifically for a breastfeeding mother without also doubling as maternity clothing. There are snap-down camis and bras, shirts with flaps and holes, dresses that stretch from here to there, and fancy woven tops that can be very, very hard to put on correctly. These clothes often have a hefty price tag to boot, and a lot of new mothers have to be careful with extra expenses as they now have a new life to invest in.

If you are worried that you won’t be able to afford all of the clothing that you need to breastfeed, I’m happy to say that in the past fourteen months I’ve gotten by with only four nursing bras, three nursing specific tops, and a whole lot of creativity. I searched within my own closet to figure out what styles worked for me without spending a fortune and I am happy to share them with you now.

1. The Sleeveless T-Shirt:

Affordable fashion for the breastfeeding mother- breastfeeding world nyc

If you aren’t comfortable showing a lot of cleavage, this is an excellent option. You can make one out of an old T-Shirt to save extra money. Your sleeve holes should be bigger around the armpit in order to breastfeed without ruining the shirt and a stretchy material works best. You can find the “Mere. Soeur.” (Mother. Sister.) shirt that I’m wearing here.

2. Double Shirt Method:

Affordable fashion for the breastfeeding mother- breastfeeding world nycThis one comes in handy if your baby dislikes nursing covers and you are uncomfortable exposing your breasts to other people. Simply wear two loose-fitting, preferably low-cut shirts, then pull the top layer up over your chest and pull the bottom layer (along with your nursing bra) down right before you latch your baby. As your baby gets older and his or her head gets bigger, it will be virtually impossible to see any flesh if you position your shirt the right way. The green shirt that I am wearing is a pre-pregnancy boyfriend tee from Target, while the striped shirt is a maternity tank from H & M that is tight-fitting enough to look normal after pregnancy. Even if I bought these brand new, it only would cost about $20 for both. Try a thrift store instead and you will save even more!

3. Loosely Fitted Tank Top:

This is an edgier style, but can be versatile depending on the type of tank top you choose. In the picture above I am demonstrating the side pull (this will cover more of your breast), as well as the pull down method (which is fast and efficient if nursing in public does not make you blush). The best thing about this shirt is that I bought it long before getting pregnant, so not only can I breastfeed comfortably in it, but it cost me nothing in the process. I wear this style a lot while babywearing, which is another great way to discreetly nurse in public without using a cover.

Any of these styles can be worn year-round when paired with jeans and a blazer, or a skirt and cardigan. Whatever style you choose, have fun and get creative! You don’t have to buy a $30 nursing top, or continue wearing your maternity clothes in order to breastfeed and be fashionable. Dig into your closet and find what works for you. The most important thing is that you are comfortable and can feed your precious baby with confidence while saving a few bucks in the process.

Happy nursing, ladies!
