Our 5th annual Big Latch On in Times Square took place this past Saturday August 3rd during World Breastfeeding Week. It was probably one of the most amazing ones I've ever had.

About five years ago, the concept of showcasing how natural and beautiful breastfeeding is started. For a few weeks I went on and on, thinking how I could achieve this while still being able to share the different experiences that mothers had. That is when the Breastfeeding World photo project took place.

For approximately 2 months, I dedicated myself to capturing beautiful breastfeeding portraits. I had the opportunity of meeting over 60 New York City mothers who participated in the first photo call. We went to different iconic locations throughout New York City and photographed these beautiful women, nursing their little ones in public. It was epic!

Breastfeeding World was quickly becoming a resource of inspiration and support for our local moms. Yet, there was still so much to be done. In the beginning of July of 2015 one of our photo session participants and beloved friend, Lisa Maloney, had a crazy idea: “Let’s hold a Breastfeeding World Big Latch On in Times Square”, she said.

Sharing the Breastfeeding Love one event at a time

Breastfeeding World's first Big Latch On in Times Square. August 2015

With a month to prepare and a whole lot of sleepless nights, I was leading the Breastfeeding World’s team. We planned and executed one of the most iconic Big Latch On events that have ever happened: 69 nursing mothers came together in Times Square to breastfeed their little ones in support.

This was the beginning of five full years of annual breastfeeding events. We took our celebrations from NYC to several other states, including two countries: Guam and Ecuador.

Our Breastfeeding Celebrations have gathered strong women who have gotten the opportunity to meet like-minded families, and support each other’s journeys. Strong friendships have developed. But most importantly, a sense of empowerment has surrounded each and every one of our events.

Back in 2016, I had to relocate to Massachusetts. Although organizing these events seemed impossible, we pulled it off each and every year. Thanks to our Breastfeeding World Volunteers our events took form and place. Our focus has always remained the same: to bring our mothering community together. Supporting and encouraging each other in our breastfeeding journeys has been one of our main goals.

Breastfeeding World – a community of love

These past two years have been a real challenge for Breastfeeding World. As the leader, I have encountered a few personal “blocks” along the way. Making it difficult to keep up.

In 2017 a professional development opportunity arose, and I took it. I was promoted to department supervisor in the local hospital I work at. To say that juggling motherhood, school activities, being a full-time working mom, managing Breastfeeding World and the overall ups and downs of life has been difficult, is a BIG understatement!

In 2018, Breastfeeding World underwent a few transitions: a shift in its volunteer team, a website re-design as well as the expansion of our events to Guam & Ecuador. It was not easy, but we did it.

Then this year came…

As much as I love Breastfeeding World and all that it stands for, I was overwhelmed with having to juggle all of the responsibilities I already had. I made up my mind that there was no way our annual breastfeeding celebration would happen this year. It was not until my dear friend Lisa Maloney, and my fellow BFW co-founders, brother Christian and mother Bella Garcia called me that I started re-thinking it.

Lisa reminded me that we are all humans, as mothers we can only do so much. She also reminded me of all the beautiful reasons why Breastfeeding World has significantly grown. As well as all the help and support it has provided to so many around the world. Instead of judging me for feeling overwhelmed and somewhat powerless, she embraced me with encouragement.

"Your eyes gleam with excitement when you talk about the BFW events," said another friend of mine.

After this small intervention of love and deep understanding, I came to the realization that our Breastfeeding World celebrations needed to happen. Not because of me, but because of the lives that it would impact. Even my sweet baby girl (who’s not a baby anymore) said: “Mami, I can’t wait to work in our BFW event”.

Just like five years ago: with a little over a month to go, I started promoting the event. With non payed 2019 sponsors, very limited financial resources, but a whole lot of willingness and love, my family and I traveled from Massachusetts to NYC for our…

To some, this year’s event might’ve been way smaller and a whole lot different from previous years. For me, this year’s event was one of the most powerful ones yet. Despite the challenges faced, I was once again able to touch the lives of the amazing NYC mothers that attended our 5th annual Big Latch On in Times Square.

This event was intimate. It was beautiful, and extremely empowering. Our 5th annual Big Latch On in Times Square was a true demonstration of love and commitment. It reminded me that Breastfeeding World is a community of love and real appreciation for one another.

I was excited seeing some old faces that have grown with us. But it was also very fun getting to know new mommies and daddies who were thrilled to be a part of something so big, yet small at the same time. Babies as little as 10 days old came to celebrate with us this unique event. It was so refreshing seeing 2 & 3 year old nurslings who were more than happy to be having their "milkies, tities, tatas".

An event to remember, an event to cherish

"Meeting in Times Square to breastfeed with all the other moms that traveled from near and far, was such an inspiring event. We all had separate challenges but we pushed through them making it to that moment on the TKTS stairs to nourish our little ones. Getting the opportunity to nurse together made me a little emotional as I connected with other moms and we discussed our experiences. I left feeling empowered, understood and supported.” – Susie Davies Concelmo, 2019 NYC BLO participant.

"It was a beautiful gathering! To see so many women immediately able to strike up conversations, to have so many content babies and children all gathered together is a statement to how natural and nurturing the breastfeeding journey is.” – Cassandra Addams, 2019 NYC BLO participant.

"This was my second year coming out. It was wonderful to meet with familiar and new faces. There’s just something about being with other women, (and men!), taking pride and standing firm in breastfeeding. It creates this great space of empowerment and resolve you can take home with you to use to continue to dispel stigma and pressure to not publicly breastfeed.

It was great to be in that energy. All of the dads got to bond and feel pride in the breastfeeding journey and their important involvement as supporters, and well, as dads! We got to see other families with older tots and kids too. Seeing a generation of breastfed kiddies growing up and flourishing was heartwarming and inspirational.

This is the kind of event that really showcases how breastfeeding isn’t an isolated thing. On the contrary, it's something that involves and positively affects the whole family because it positively affects the children.” – Teena Botan, 2019 NYC BLO participant.

My deepest gratitude to you all

Breastfeeding World began after I became a mother to my beautiful baby girl. It began after I was told: “we don’t do ‘THAT’ in here,” while shopping in a children’s clothing store in the UWS. It began after I felt powerless and disoriented by the double standards surrounding a women’s body. It began after I felt the need to be the voice of many through my photography. It began because of each and every one of you, so, THANK YOU.

Our breastfeeding journey lasted 4.5 years, it was not easy but it was worth it! - ©Alegares Photography

Throughout these past five years, Breastfeeding World has given me a reason to keep on going and pushing forward despite the many obstacles. Although my daughter and I stopped breastfeeding at 4.5 years, I feel that my “nursing relationship” with BFW is still going on (if you know what I mean!). That strong bond and connection we share, grows deeper every day. Despite my imperfections as its “mother,” I feel that BFW has been able to thrive because of you.

Our commitment to empowering women around the world is what keeps us going day to day. Breastfeeding World will continue moving forward and just like our individual motherhood journeys. We will continue sharing the breastfeeding love one day at a time. So, hold on tight! Are you ready for our epic ride?

I would LOVE to hear your thoughts. What would you like to see more of in the future from Breastfeeding World? Please share them in the comment section below!.

Don't forget! Check out our social media pages to keep up with the breastfeeding love.

If you participated in the event and would like to see more pictures please register to view our gallery. You may purchase images directly through the site, thank you for supporting Breastfeeding World.

It’s that time of the year once again, our iconic Breastfeeding World celebration in New York City is right around the corner and we could not be more excited!

During the past 5 years Breastfeeding World has seen multiple challenges, from headquarters moving to a different state, to team restructuring, to website re-design it’s been one ‘hell of a ride’ but it’s been worth it for one simple reason: we have stayed true to our values and beliefs, we continue to empower and help educate new and seasoned mommies about the importance of breastfeeding.

Throughout the past years, Breastfeeding World has put together several different events around the USA, Guam and Ecuador which has helped us grow and expand in many ways. Our Breastfeeding Celebration in NYC this year will be the place to be on Saturday August 3rd, 2019.

Our breastfeeding world celebration is iconic and unique!

Mothers and babies from all five boroughs, as well as from New Jersey, Long Island and Connecticut will gather at the TKTS steps in Times Square to nurse their little ones for one minute and get counted in the global number for the Big Latch On. We aim to bring communities together and allow for friendships to be built between the families/mothers that participate.

As a new mom you might find yourself wanting to meet new “mommy friends” in your area and this is a great opportunity for that to happen. For five years we have seen several families come and go during our events, it has given us immense gratitude to have been a part of their breastfeeding journeys but most importantly to have witnessed the growth of their babies and their breastfeeding success.

Do not miss our iconic event coming to New York City once again. Let’s make history together and stand up, or should I say, latch on for love and support of all the breastfeeding mothers who have been shamed for nursing in public around the world!.

Make sure you share our event on Facebook and pre-register to guarantee a Breastfeeding World FREE tote bag

Summer, oh summer! It’s certainly one of the best seasons of the year but it’s also one of the busiest as well. Specially if you happen to live on the beautiful island of Martha’s Vineyard.

This year Breastfeeding World hosted its third annual Martha’s Vineyard Big Latch On and boy was it a good one. Back on August 5th, 16 Martha’s Vineyard breastfeeding moms came together once again to make this event a great one.

Some new faces and some returning mothers who year by year make these events well worth it.

One of the special things I love about our Martha’s Vineyard Latch On is how intimate and empowering it always is. I’ve been able to see how these mamas and babes grow in their journeys and this year I had the opportunity to photograph the same ladies I met back in 2015 when we held our very first Breastfeeding World photo session on the island.

This time around, they came with their new babes and a full-term nursling. (Kudos to Sarah and Mili, you make us proud!).

The beauty of breastfeeding and motherhood is that each journey is completely different and unique in its own way. Not only from mother to mother but from baby to baby as well. No matter how many books you may read or how many classes you may attend to, by the time that the baby comes you might be very informed as to what is about to happen but, are you really ready? Probably not.

During this year’s Martha’s Vineyard Big Latch On a momma told me she wasn’t sure whether or not I would continue on with the events due to me not nursing anymore… Let me take the chance and tell you all a short version of my story, the one probably none of you know….

My sweet mini-me was born on this gorgeous island, surrounded by beautiful landscapes that make this location THE place to be during summer.  My experience with giving birth was astounding, I went in not feeling prepared but my birthing team at the Hospital was amazing.

I was very fortunate, although my baby’s father was not present and I was/am a single momma, I had more than what I had wished for: I had my mother and my sister next to me, they were part of my unmedicated natural birth and everything that came thereafter.

I can assure you that without them my breastfeeding journey would’ve only been a few weeks affair.

My mother Bella and my sister Shelyn, two breastfeeding veterans with 8 children altogether knew exactly what to do in my moments of despair. With tears in my eyes I recall one time begging them to take my baby away because the pain of nursing and cracked nipples was unbearable. (Can you relate?)

Mom would cook all the healthy foods that my body needed to recover while Shelyn would help me take care of the baby. My mama would pass on some old wives’ tales from Ecuador while teaching me some great breastfeeding techniques and some massages to relief engorgement and potential clogged ducts.

With their support I made it past the challenging first three weeks of breastfeeding. Tears flowing down my face on several occasions but they never let me quit when I wanted to.

Our next milestone was 6 months, we made it. One full year, we made it. Eighteen months, we made it. Two years, we made it… until we kind of stopped keeping track.

My sweet mini-me nursed for 4 ½ years and weaned off earlier this year. Was it a bumpy ride? HELL YASS! Was it worth it? Every minute of it.

Today, as we lay down to sleep, (we bedshare baby!) there are nights where she turns looking for her ‘tities’. She knows that no milk comes out but she feels safe and that’s all that matters.

Did I encounter criticism for nursing beyond 2 years? Yes. Was it uncomfortable? At times, yes. Did it matter at the end? No. My baby has grown to be a sweet child who is happy and smiles quite often, she knows that mommy works so hard on Breastfeeding World and she loves helping me every way she can.

To you my sweet mama, who wasn’t sure the events would continue because I stopped nursing… Oh YES they will!

Little mini-me was who inspired me to start Breastfeeding World in the first place, our journey through breastfeeding and motherhood in general is what kept me going. Getting to know women who identified with each other in many ways was my fuel to push through.

Although we stopped nursing this year there are thousands of new mothers (and existing ones) that are going through their breastfeeding & motherhood journeys and they Need. Us.

Breastfeeding World is bigger than my baby and I because now, all of you are part of its history as well as its success.

The Martha’s Vineyard Big Latch On is all about celebrating you, strong women and mothers who lift each other up. No matter in what phase of your motherhood journey you may be in, at some point you will need the support system that I thankfully had and that is what we aim to be for you all: the encouraging voice that pushes you through all the obstacles.

Let us all celebrate these amazing Martha’s Vineyard Breastfeeding Moms, you are amazing!

“Don’t focus on how far you have to go, celebrate how far you’ve come!”

When a movement crosses boarder and reaches smaller communities around the world to join a global effort,

it means that you are in the right path of impacting the lives of many.

This past May we expanded our reach to help and encourage women in all parts of the world. Through our Photography Community & Outreach Program professionals from an array of countries have joined our community of artists who volunteer their time to gift mothers a breastfeeding photo session in the global movement to #normalizebreastfeeding.

Launching our international photography community has been a very rewarding experience. We are happy to showcase our very first Mar del Plata’s Breastfeeding World Photo Session that took place in Argentina this past Spring.

Naturalidad Maternal

Thirteen mothers and fifteen little ones came together to be a part of our first Mar del Plata photo production: Naturalidad Maternal (natural motherhood). The session itself took place in a beautiful iconic location of this gorgeous city: Villa Victoria.  For our first event in Argentina we united forces with La Leche League – Mar del Plata and had a phenomenal lactation specialist, Sandra Ramírez, answering questions for all the participants.

Special Thanks

A group of talented makeup artists volunteered their time as well to gift these wonderful mommas a complete makeover before their photo session. Thank you: Cristina Ponzini, Verónica Bozzi, Mariela Valle, Mariana Bella Fontenla and Lorena Ferrari for being a part of this change.

We have been very lucky to be able to partner with amazing women-owned companies that have provided the support we’ve needed to put these smaller events together. Following our 2018 Big Latch On Platinum Sponsor: Kindred Bravely’s initiative, #bravemotherhood, we have aimed to produce outstanding sessions were strong and powerful mothers unite in efforts of normalizing breastfeeding and making their voice heard in a beautiful way.

Breastfeeding is widely recognized as being the best option for your baby. It is known that breast milk is packed with nutrients your baby needs specially during the first six months of life. Any amount of breast milk is highly beneficial, but the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends exclusively nursing for a minimum of 6 months.

With all the benefits that come with breastmilk, why is that Breastfeeding is so frowned upon by many?

“My opinion is that anybody offended by breastfeeding is staring too hard.” – David Allen

In society where women have been highly sexualized, it frustrating that breastfeeding is considered a controversial topic. Women are often harassed for nursing in public, they have the rights to breastfeed anywhere. Why is it that mothers face discrimination, embarrassment and insults for nurturing their babies in the most natural and humane way?

“There is one thing the photograph must contain, the humanity of the moment.”
— Robert Frank

Our  Breastfeeding World team believes that one picture is more powerful than a thousand words. Our movement began with our photography project in New York City and has changed the lives of many in the past 4 years through our photographers’ breathtaking images.

This year we are so happy to see our amazing photography community grow and to get to know women around the world who like us believe in the importance of normalizing breastfeeding one picture at a time.

We have the pleasure to have worked with the talented Raelyn Ramey who hosted a Breastfeeding World Photo Session in Des Moines, Iowa sponsored by Kindred Bravely.

Meet our Breastfeeding World photographer

Raelyn is an art photographer, who specializes in weddings. Her journey toward breastfeeding began when she had her own little girl, Eliisa. Not expecting the hiccups that would come in that journey, she soon found herself surrounded by love and support during a very emotional time. With the encouragement from her husband and the strangers that came forward to help feed her child so she could ultimately meet her goal of one year, is a gift she will forever be thankful for.

Raelyn soon decided that she wanted to find a way to give back to her community by providing small breastfeeding sessions to mama’s that wanted to document such an intimate moment in both of their lives. No matter the type of photo sessions, Raelyn strives to capture authentic, raw emotions through her art work. Find Raelyn’s work here and on Instagram.

An empowering day to remember

Nineteen strong, powerful, beautiful women came together to be part of our session: Mother Nurture -Awaken which took place this past May 20th. Special thanks to Trixie’s Salon and their team of professional makeup artists who gave these moms a gift of makeup and hair for the session.

Des Moines, Iowa’s first Breastfeeding World Photo Session

“Nursing started off really easy for us. My 10mo old does have a small tongue tie but we opt out of getting it cut because it wasn’t affecting his weight gain and it wasn’t painful for me. Adrian is my first baby so everything was new to me. I do wish I had more knowledge on breastfeeding before I started because no one tells you how time consuming it can be, how dry and itchy your boobs can get or how engorgement hurts so bad. I will never forget the morning my milk came in and I woke up in so much pain. I didn’t know if I should pump, or if I should wake him up to nurse, I had no idea what was going on. I soon found out pumping helps with engorgement. I was cursed/blessed with over supply, It is a love hate thing. I love that I produce enough milk for not only my baby but for babies I donate to, but I hate pumping because It is so time consuming. I do love the bond breastfeeding gives you, the relaxing feeling, and the high you feel when the oxytocin is released. I love that I get tons of snuggles in with my boy each day. And as much as pumping sucks I am so glad I have been able to donated 2500oz so far!” – Ashlee Bliss, 2018 Breastfeeding World Photo Session Participant

“Our breastfeeding journey started out very rough because of a severe tongue tie. After a revision surgery and lots of work, he was able to nurse successfully. It has been a tremendous amount of work, and we fought hard to get to where we are now.” – Aerica Baker, 2018 Breastfeeding World Photo Session

“Breastfeeding has been such an amazing journey! Emma is my 3rd baby, so I feel confident in all aspects of breastfeeding. I love the special bond I have with her! Before I had kids, I never knew I would become so passionate about breastfeeding.” – Ashley Osborn, 2018 Breastfeeding World Photo Session Participant

“I always knew I wanted to nurse my child. I remember vivid dreams before I was ever even pregnant of a beautiful baby with thick, dark, curly hair lovingly nestled on my breast.” – Samantha Damman, 2018 Breastfeeding World Photo Session Participant

“My breastfeeding journey hasn’t been the easiest. I always imagined it to be easy and natural because honestly that’s how people and society portrayed it. However it was anything but easy and it didn’t come naturally.” – Nicole Huber, 2018 Breastfeeding World Photo Session Participant

“Started feeding my baby when she was born & was not familiar with breastfeeding at all. I was the first in my family to have a baby and therefore it was all completely foreign to me.” – Stephanie Finnegan, 2018 Breastfeeding World Photo Session Participant

“I was blessed to breastfeed my son until he was 2.5 years old. Now I’m working through the challenge of nursing my twin rainbow girls. Tandem nursing is an interesting journey.” – Katie Johnson, 2018 Breastfeeding World Photo Session Participant

“I exclusively pumped for over 2 mo this after my daughter had heart surgery. She is finally able to nurse again, and I couldn’t be happier! The bond we share is so strong, and I am so thankful for it!” – Wendy Alexander, 2018 Breastfeeding World Photo Session Participant

“I’ve been breastfeeding for almost two years, starting with the birth of my daughter Carmen and continuing with my 2-month-old Jonah. I’ve had moments that were challenging, funny, and beautiful.” – Jenny Comstock, 2018 Breastfeeding World Photo Session Participant

“I wasn’t sure what to expect with breastfeeding my daughter. I’m a first time mom and the experiences of the women I know who have breastfed were pretty varied.” – Rachel Vaughn, 2018 Breastfeeding World Photo Session Participant

“This is my second baby and breastfeeding, thankfully, had been fairly easy for us this time around. We had the normal kinks to work out in the beginning, but I’m so thankful we have made it this long!” – Katy Sowden, 2018 Breastfeeding World Photo Session Participant

“I started breastfeeding with my first born two and a half years ago. My only set goal was to nurse as long as she needed. One year breastfeeding quickly passed, and soon I was pregnant and nursing a toddler. Now, most nursing sessions include both of my babies.” – Marlise Boedeker, 2018 Breastfeeding World Photo Session Participant

“I have been blessed to be able to breastfeed all three of my children. My youngest, Maverick, is 9 months old now and I’m hoping to be able to breastfeed him until he is a year old.” – Veronica Evans, 2018 Breastfeeding World Photo Session Participant

“I had always thought breastfeeding would be easy since it was so natural but when my little one came into the world I realized that wasn’t always the case. We noticed that she wasn’t getting back up to her birth weight.” – Meredith Larson, 2018 Breastfeeding World Photo Session Participant

“I have successfully breastfed both of my children. However, in the beginning it wasn’t always easy due to others opinions. Throughout my journey, I encountered many people who were uncomfortable around breastfeeding.” – Brandi Rocknell, 2018 Breastfeeding World Photo Session Participant

“I have breastfed each of my older three girls each over two years and I have a 4 month old girl who is now breastfeeding.” – Sonya Hicks, 2018 Breastfeeding World Photo Session Participant

“We had difficulties from the start. From an undiagnosed tongue and lip tie to low supply to allergies which forced me to change my own diet dramatically. We persevered and we are now at almost 15 months and still going strong.” – Samantha Pierce, 2018 Breastfeeding World Photo Session Participant

New York City is where Breastfeeding World began, to us this amazing beautiful city is full of magic and dreams come true.

This past April 7th our dearest friend Molly Ades from Soul Ma invited me to join her and the rest of our beloved NYC mamas at the 2018 MommyCon. With much excitement we initiated the trip back home and decided that during our time there we would be hosting one of our iconic NYC’s Breastfeeding World Photo sessions.

During these past few years that I’ve had the opportunity of photographing women from so many different backgrounds I’ve learned that less is better. I’ve always wanted to showcase the essence of what breastfeeding looks like in their daily lives and this was not going to be any different.

NYC’s Breastfeeding World, empowering women one picture at a time

Motherhood itself can be challenging, being a nursing mother in a super busy city is not as easy as it may seem. Standing up for the normalization of breastfeeding in public can be intimidating but doing it with a group of women that you know support you and share your same goal is truly empowering.

Kimmy Meyer

“Breastfeeding was something I knew I definitely would do for my baby. I don’t remember when I made that decision along my journey of pregnancy, but I knew that I didn’t want to formula feed. I read a ton of books while pregnant which made me aware of all the amazing things breastfeeding can provide for my baby.

One of the best books I read was La Leche League’s book, “The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding.” I decided to breastfeed because I read about all the health benefits my son gets from breastmilk. His health is a top priority to me so this just made sense. I love the bond we’ve created now from breastfeeding as he’s been exclusively breastfed now for 6 months.” – Kimmy Meyer

#DidYouKnow New York State was the first state in the nation to pass a law protecting a mother’s right to breastfeed in public.

It is a civil rights law, NY CLS Civ R 79-e (Article 7 Miscellaneous Provisions).

1994 NY ALS 98; 1994 NY LAWS 98; 1994 NYSN 3999 79-e Right to Breast Feed. Not with standing any other provision of law, a mother may breastfeed her baby in any location, public or private, where the mother is otherwise authorized to be, irrespective of whether or not the nipple of the mother’s breast is covered during or incidental to the breast feeding.

Sometimes pictures that have less of a “production” per say encompass more of the reality. One of the many blessings I’ve had with creating this beautiful platform and seeing it grow is having met many families that throughout these years have grown together with us and who have formed strong and personal relationships as well as amazing friendships.

Lissette, Ralph and little Lola

During NYC’s Breastfeeding World photo session I had the chance of seeing this amazing family again. They’ve accompanied us since our very first NYC Big Latch On back in 2015.

Seeing Lola grow up and knowing her mom’s determination for breastfeeding has given me so much joy.

“When I was pregnant, my original goal was to breastfeed at least 6 months. That was very hopeful for me because I came from a large family where there was always a new baby around but breastfeeding was not something that was usually celebrated or encouraged. I was happy to find support in my sister, who became well versed in the benefits of breastfeeding through her job at a W.I.C. Office.

I found more support in various facebook groups, which lead me to the 1st NYC Big Latch On event. Where I found so much enlightenment that I resolved to breastfeed as long as it was best for my daughter and I. During this photo shoot, I was very emotional because seeing other moms nursing their younger babies made me realize how I took for granted how amazing being able to breastfeed for this long truly is. How much comfort and love my child still finds in nursing 3 and a half years later.

How we made it all the way here from not even being able to get a latch and having to give her a couple ounces of formula when she was first born. All the panic from those early days, erased by an amazing breastfeeding relationship nearly 4 years later.” – Lissette Perez

Liza Price

During NYC’s Breastfeeding World photo session we had the tremendous pleasure of seeing this mama return. Liza participated in our photo project back in 2014 with her little Reuben. This year we had the opportunity to meet her second baby boy who gave us so many smiles and reminded us why we started and why we keep on going.

“I always knew I wanted to breastfeed. My mother breastfed both my brothers and I so it just seemed natural to me. I never realized how stressful and sometimes painful it would be in the beginning, but I had my mother and my best friend who also breastfed her daughter to encourage and help me along the way.

Joseph and I are now 19 months in with no plans on stopping until he self-weans. I love the bond that was forged through breastfeeding and wouldn’t have it any other way.”- Raquel Sandino

Christiana Manson

For Christiana and her cute baby girl nursing in public without a cover felt a bit intimidating. Being a New York City mama she had done it several times but never felt quite at ease.

When I invited her to join NYC’s Breastfeeding World photo session, I was confident that experiencing this sisterhood of like-minded mamas who welcome and support each other would encourage her. Soon after we started our photo session Christiana was a pro!.

Thank you for believing in us but most importantly, thank you for believing in yourself!

“My breastfeeding journey has been really easy from the very beginning. I went to two breastfeeding courses at my birth center when I was pregnant so I felt prepared.

On the day I gave birth, my daughter latched on right away and I had another lactation coach that helped and gave me some tips. I never felt any pain and it has always been one of the best moments that my daughter and I share.

Breastfeeding is also extremely convenient and helped me get some sleep in the beginning when my daughter was still adjusting to life outside the womb.

I really enjoyed our photo session it was sooo empowering being photographed while breastfeeding when people treat breastfeeding like it’s something that needs to be done in the dark as if it’s shameful.

I Loved being the center of attention in a busy intersection it was almost poetic. By doing the photoshoot I was saying Breastfeeding is Not Shameful! Instead it is so beautiful it should be photographed!

I always intended to breastfeed. My mother did and had a good experience breastfeeding. Her experience and the way she talked about breastfeeding as natural and normal definitely impacted my thoughts on breastfeeding. Thank you mom!” – Christiana Manson

We LOVE sharing the breastfeeding love through imagery, which is why we are so passionate about showcasing moms breastfeeding on Instagram, the visual social media network.

That’s a lot of boobs and babies.

So why is it that Instagram moms #cantstopwontstop when it comes to showing their babies getting that sweet liquid gold? Because visualization is important. There is a reason that inspirational speakers, and athletes put such an emphasis on visualizing their goals: because the power of imagery makes SUCH an impact on our brains, that mental visualizations are shown to be almost as effective as physical practice (source).

How does that correlate to the importance of seeing women breastfeeding on Instagram? Because the best way to break down sexual stigmas and breastfeeding ignorance is to make it normal. (Speaking of, if this is something you are passionate about, you are going to want to read this post about being a breastfeeding warrior, and letting go.)

So the best way to make breastfeeding normal, is to see it. It’s why nursing in public isn’t just feeding a baby- it’s changing the way society looks at breasts, moms, and women. Breastfeeding Photography is the foundation of our project, and we will always be proud that we are part of an incredible movement across the globe to support women.

Just Like Me: Real Moms Breastfeeding On Instagram

Breastfeeding World has ALWAYS celebrated breastfeeding mothers on our Instagram feed, but in the New Year, we decided to change things up a bit. For the first week of the year, we decided to show not just images from our stunning team of professional photographers, but to share photos of real women, with real stories, successes, and struggles in a project our editing manager dubbed “Just Like Me: Real Moms Breastfeeding”. We fell in love with photo after photo- every tag, DM, and image of women breastfeeding on Instagram had us cheering in joy.

Here are our absolute favorite images:

1. When Mom breastfeeding on Instagram do it all:

Pumping?  No problem. Nursing in public? #nailedit. Getting married? Bring it on. Scottish Mom Olive knows “you do what you gotta do!”

2. Breastfeeding with Ginormous Boobs

There is a complete myth out there that if you are a large chested woman, breastfeeding should be easy@Kloudsmama assures while sharing her gorgeous image of her and her child breastfeeding on Instagram, that’s not the case.

3.Allllll The Newborn Squishiness

These mommas breastfeeding on Instagram have our ovaries quivering in love. I can practically smell that breastfed newborn sweetness through the screen. Twenty to life, Lauren, twenty to life!

4. “I’ll breastfeed as long as she wants!”

Why is it that society thinks that if you breastfeed past one, it’s instantly time to start weaning your child? While full term breastfeeding isn’t as extreme as people like to think, the social stigmas surrounding it keep many moms practicing boundaries and not sharing photos of themselves breastfeeding as much. That’s part of the reason we are SO in love with this milk bath image that Hawaiian mom, Aubrie, shared:

5. Sweet, Sweet Baby Rolls

There isn’t a mom out there not in love with sweet milky sustained baby rolls. And the look of love in this sweet girl’s eyes give us all the feels.

6. Breastfeeding while pregnant

Another breastfeeding myth out there is that it’s not safe to breastfeed while pregnant, and Aida’s stunning photos shine with proof that in most cases, it’s just not true. (Not to mention, we love the before and after of the pregnancy and then tandem nursing!)

Instagram Photo

7. Motherhood, Unfiltered

Over and over, moms breastfeeding on Instagram show that women are multi-tasking queens! And while we all get touched out one time or another, we also frequently remind ourselves just how lucky we are to be so needed and loved.

8. #MomGoals

I don’t know any mom that has ever looked so amazingly empowered while breastfeeding on Instagram as Jessie. I’d double dog dare anyone to try to shame her breastfeeding her adorable son. Double. Dog. Dare.

9. Anytime, anywhere

These three mamas take breastfeeding on Instagram to a whole new level. (Anyone recognize our very own Abby D?) They are showing the world that when your kiddo is hungry, your kiddo gets to eat. End. Of. Story.

10. Beautiful Breastfeeding

No caption needed.

Instagram Photo

Make up, no shower, professional photography or a quick brelfie with your iPhone- mothers across Instagram are uniting together for a powerful cause. The point isn’t to “flash your boobs”, “get attention”, “act like you’re a better mom”, or any other stupid comment you hear society say when they try to oppress images of women nursing.

When nursing moms share images of ourselves nursing, post brelfies, or simply nurse in public, we are showing the world that breastfeeding is just a mom and a baby, and that is beautiful. And we are telling other nursing moms that they are okay, they don’t have to hide, and they are not alone

So let’s #uniteinmotherhood , Share the breastfeeding love, and keep posting those pics!

A beautiful piece about the power of imagery in the normalizie breastfeeding campaign, particularly moms sharing breastfeeding photos on instagram. #brelfie #breastfeedingworld #normalizebreastfeeding #breastfeedingphotography

January 27, 2018, the breastfeeding community celebrated World Breast Pumping Day!

Unless you’re a pumping mom, no one really knows the endless sacrifice that pumping moms have in their breastfeeding journey.

Pumping Moms Get Sh!t Done!

This isn’t to say that breastfeeding or formula feeding mothers don’t get sh!t done – but it’s to recognize the fact that moms how pump, whether exclusively, by need or by choice, have added duties to their days. They not only have to take care of their child, they are also needing to make time to pump. They need to find a place to pump. And they need to have supplies to pump. With all those balls in the air, they also need to have peace of mind to pump enough.

In a society where fast paced is the key – pumping moms have to sacrifice free time for pump time.

Related Post: How Does a Mom Get Anything Done?

This movement is Necessary

Last year, the team from Snugabell, a Canadian retailer of pumping essential and creators of Pump Ease hands free nursing bras, set a date a side in January to honor all the moms who pump breast milk for their little ones. They wanted to create a special day, similar to that of the Big Latch On. Moms who pump, exclusively or as needed, would be celebrated and supported for their tireless efforts to nourish their children.

“The breastfeeding world can be overwhelming and moms who pump as part –or as all – of their breastfeeding journey often feel excluded. World Breast Pumping Day is an opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate the time, energy, and dedication pumping requires; it’s a chance to honor the love in every ounce.”

-Snugabell

This year’s them is “Pumping Moms Get Sh!t Done.”

We want to break through the pastel version of motherhood we’re fed by mainstream media and laud the perfectly imperfect reality of pumping moms. Pumpin’ mamas are building freezer stashes, waking up during the middle of the night to get one more pumping session in, skipping lunch with coworkers to pump at their desk while inhaling a sandwich, pumping beside their NICU babe’s bassinet, and sterilizing pump parts and bottles (so many pump parts and bottles) while they carry on with daily life.

-Snugabell

As a pumping mom, the word “exhausted” is what I use to describe my day. It paints the color of no breaks – and literally, as a working mother, this was true. While on a lunch break, I was pumping. On a 15 minute break, I was pumping. Then when I returned home from work, I was breastfeeding. Truly the only time I was not doing anything, was when I was sleeping.

What this means and how you can participate

Recognizing that mothers need better resources, care and appreciation has been undying voice of women. As we enter into smaller communities of moms, the breastfeeding community, we still have micro communities that need additional support beyond the general need. Our working moms, our stay at home moms, our pumping moms need support. And that support is given by its members on days similar to the Big Latch On and World Breast Pumping Day. They are supported through unity and empowerment!

The work and dedication pumping requires is impressive. Pumping, setting up, cleaning up, feeding, storing the milk – pumping can take more than twice the time and effort than breastfeeding or formula feeding. We started to hear from pumping moms that they felt excluded from the breastfeeding world, especially exclusive pumpers. They said they didn’t feel like they were really breastfeeding, which was heartbreaking to hear because these women are hooking themselves up to machines, sacrificing sleep and relaxation and social lives to pump to feed their babies. We felt they needed to be acknowledged and celebrated.

-Snugabell

So, on Jan 27, we took to social media- you can too

  • Give a shout out to your friends, your neighbors, your co-workers, the woman commuting next to you – anyone who is a pumping mom and tell her she is amazing.
  • Post photos of breast pumping moms, bottles of milk, or storage bags of breastmilk
  • Look out for images you can share on social, then give other moms encouragement
  • Use the hashtags #WeCanPump, #WhyIPump, and #PumpingMomsGTD
  • Tag @Breastfeeding_world and @snugabell on Instagram or Twitter
  • Then, join in the fun of giveaways at the Snugabell WBPD Event Page on Facebook throughout the day!

We want to reach moms where they are, scrolling through their phones and trying to catch their breath in between sterilizing bottles and serving dinner, wiping noses and bums, and rocking little ones to sleep. We want to acknowledge the many ways moms are getting shit done. Because we think moms are amazing and we’re tired of being fed this pastel version of motherhood where everyone is happy and everything is clean.

Life is messy and chaotic and there’s a certain type of beauty in the noise. World Breast Pumping Day is an opportunity for us all (moms-to-be or moms of many) to stand together and support each other’s choices, even if those choices look different than the ones we make for our own families.

-Snugabell

Erica Farwell Photography captures Breastfeeding World’s first ever Guam Photo Shoot:

A mother’s breastfeeding journey is no doubt a life event that is most successful and enjoyable when we have the support of others, and guidance of those who have gone before us.

That is why it’s no surprise that when Alexia Garcia began her New York City photo project through Alegares Photography, it became a vital resource, encouraging and empowering mothers. What began within the NYC community, now stretches across the globe.

Breastfeeding World has grown so much over the few short years of its existence.

After having our first-ever out of country event in Ecuador in August 2017, we headed to the West Pacific Island of Guam and held Breastfeeding World’s second out of country photo shoot with Erica Farwell Photography.

Quick Facts About Guåhan (Guam)

  • Guåhan, as locals refer to Guam, is a territory of the United States, similar in country status as Puerto Rico. The tropical island is nearly half way across the world from from Washington, D.C. (about 7,920 miles!). It is roughly an 8 hour flight west of Hawaii, 3.5 hour flight south of Japan and is home to over 160,000 island residents.
  • The weather is summer all year around. IT. IS. HOT! But it is also the island paradise many seek, with its white sand and clear blue beach waters.
  • The local food is amazing. It’s a blend of pacific-asian flavors – heavy on the rice and soy sauce. With just the right touch of Chamorro flavor, it’s incomparable to others.
  • The hospitality of the people is like none other in the world.
  • And if you ask any tourists from Asia, the luxury shopping is just the topper of what makes Guåhan such a renowned destination for travel and vacation in the pacific.

An island full of diversity

Guam is native home of Chamorros, though a vast majority of the population, identify as Guamanian – locals who consider Guåhan home but may not come from native lineage. It’s a fascinating diverse population full of culture from other outer Micronesian islands like Palau, Chuuk, Kosrae, Yap and Pohnpei, further combined with Asian flare of residents with ties to Japan, China, Vietnam, Thailand and the Philippines. And that’s just a few!

And while there was much political controversy the month prior to the Guåhan Photo Shoot (the first instance of North Korean missile threats to the island in August 2017), there wasn’t much to stop local moms from gathering for Breastfeeding World’s event.

Guåhan’s Iconic Latte Stone Park

The most remarkable aspect about Breastfeeding World that sets our community apart from others in the #normalizebreastfeeding movement, is documenting mothers and children in the most iconic places of our cities. For Guåhan residents, aside from the beautiful beach shores, the Angel Santos Latte Stone Memorial Park is iconic as it gets. It’s lies in the city capital of Hagåtña and makes for a central commute for residents.

Latte Stones are one of the very few artifacts from Chamorro ancient society that remain.

Breastfeeding World, Guam

These megalith structures are carved from limestone and were then used as a foundation for traditional hut houses. The stone’s height is also a symbol for class, with larger latte stones belonging to higher class residents, like chiefs. Smaller latte stones, thus, belonged to lower class residents.

Throughout Guåhan’s history – through multiple country colonization and the World Wars – a majority of existing latte stones of the island were destroyed. What remains standing give locals and academic scholars a glimpse into what ancient Chamorro villages may have looked like prior to western influence.

Capturing the Spirit of Guåhan

We couldn’t have asked for a better landmark to capture the spirit of Guåhan. The setting of Latte Stones in the background and gathering of event attendees were a perfect representation of the island as it is today.  Seeing a gathering of both local residents and military personnel was beyond AMAZING.

Bridging the Gap between local and military families

There is an inherent gap between local and military communities in terms of shared community resources. This is often seen in countries with overseas military bases, like Guåhan. Often, locals do not have access to military resources, and military families are less familiar of available local resources. In the mist of it, having Breastfeeding World’s event open to the public  meant all families could gather in support of normalizing breastfeeding and connect with each other as breastfeeding advocates for the island.

There are dozens of volunteers from a handful of local organizations who lead the island’s breastfeeding movements.

They are the Breastfeeding Action Team Guam, which is comprised of educators, lactation consultants, medical professionals, doulas, nurses, business owners, government leaders, etc. Their expertise play a hand in guaranteeing that local moms have their breastfeeding rights heard at work and in public spaces. Contributing hard spent time, they focus on bringing awareness to the island. Together, they do this by educating the community of the benefits of breastfeeding and the resources of support that are available to families.

Sharing resources as a community is the goal

Breastfeeding World’s Guåhan shoot gave the perfect opportunity to share these resources with attending guests. While some moms knew about local breastfeeding groups (like IBCLCs Kirsten Robert and Barbara Mafnas’ Guam Mama’s Breastfeeding Support, or the La Leche League of Guam), others did not.  While online and physical support systems are in place on island, like other communities, awareness of these resources is limited to just a small portion of the motherhood population.

It was exciting to exchange support groups between military and local moms. Most exciting was encouraging mother’s to attend the free Saturday Socials at Guam’s birthing center, Sagua Managu. Every week, Barbara Mafnas, IBCLC, holds free community classes for mothers. She does assessments on babies, checking weight, checking latch, etc. It’s a great opportunity for families with no health insurance to see a specialist who can help recommend or suggest needs for a their newborn as it relates to breastfeeding.

Mafnas goes the extra mile by providing other exemplary parenting classes for first time parents. She holds Daddy Classes once a month. There, first time fathers can learn the basics of swaddling baby, changing diapers, assisting mom during breastfeeding and other important teachings such as looking for baby cues.

Resources for Local Moms and Military Families

We also shared local government resources for families. Learning about Guåhan’s Women, Infant and Children Program (WIC), gave insight to families who need assistance. It helped clarify questions for those who were curious if they qualified. And it was so nice to have a WIC representative stop by the event to meet with families. This reassured us that there is support for our cause.

For military families who prefer closer to base events, we shared the efforts of Guam’s La Leche League. The group meets twice a month – once in the north, then in the south end of the island. Like BATG, LLL Guam is spearheaded by volunteers, who resumed La Leche League presence on island about 2 years ago. Connor Kelly is the point of contact for LLL Guam. In her work, she speaks about breastfeeding bi-monthly at the airforce base’s Bundles For Babies Program.

What attendees had to say

Let’s preface the highlights of our event by saying that Guam is HOT! We knew traveling from a temperate stateside climate to a tropical island paradise would mean diving into warm weather. However, what we failed to remember was the humidity!

My favorite part was seeing babies of different ages that are being breast fed.

-BFW Guam Guest, on her favorite part of the event

The weather was worth it

We have to (have to!) thank all the families that showed up, socialized and gracefully continued to participate in the shoot despite the weather. The week prior was a never ending rainstorm for the island. This meant that on the first day of no rain, the day of the shoot, there was much more humidity than usual. Top that off with Guam’s heat, gave families a limited amount of time before babies became uncomfortable just hanging outside. It really was so hot with very little breeze that time of day.

There was nothing we could do but laugh and spin our facial sweat as a “glowing” part of the portraits. (Insert chuckle here.)

But that is island life – and island weather. Because of this, the shoot started a few minutes earlier than planned. However, even after group photos were done, guest were still making their way to the shoot. It was nice to see mothers drop by and get individual photos taken by Erica Farwell to contribute to the Photo Project.

I just recently found out about this group online, and for me it meant that there are mothers out there who are successful BF mothers who achieved thier goals with the help of others support. They have thier own stories to share, with struggles, but were able to finish thier goal by getting help from support groups like this.

-MJCT, on what Breastfeeding World means to her

Empowering and encouraging mothers is our mission

While the weather wasn’t the most comfortable, many of the guests said they would attend another event like this in the future. It was great to hear that mothers were encouraged to be comfortable nursing in public. This most especially for locals who come from very traditionally cultured backgrounds. In sense of encouragement was felt in every conversation.

For me and my family it made us comfortable feeding around others most especially new people!
– BFW Guam Guest, on the impact BFW has on her community
It helps encourage me and other mothers to continue breastfeeding, and to show first time mothers and the rest of our community that breastfeeding is natural and that we should be able to do so publicly.
– BFW Guam Guest, on the impact BFW has on her community

Creating a Community

Before and after the photo session, we raffled off Breastfeeding World Swag Bags that included state side sponsors from the Big Latch On. We also had great giveaways from local shops like The Modern Bump and Shop Guam Mom Life.

Beyond the photos, beyond the raffles, was the highlight of creating a community, then connecting mothers with each other face to face.

The online community of motherhood is a very strong, empowering one.   So, naturally, meeting people in person really makes an impact on that camaraderie.

Which was made evident through the guests’ response to their favorite part of the event:

“Being with and meeting new people.

-BFW Guam Guest

“Taking the photos and meeting everyone.

-BFW Guam Guest

“Meeting other moms.

-BFW Guam Guest

“The mothers who i got to meet during the shoot.

-BFW Guam Guest

Sharing impact

One suggestion that spoke volumes of the need and want from mothers for more community support in breastfeeding was:

More mothers ! Also a word of mouth publicity about more events like this.

-BFW Guam Guest, on what could BFW Guam better

The power of community is strong. The movement of normalizing breastfeeding is border-less. Whether it be online or in person, finding that tribe which supports families in the journey of parenthood is an amazing feeling. And that is the heart of Breastfeeding World.

Connecting in Struggles and Triumphs through Breastfeeding

“After months of struggling, I finally reached peace. I found confidence, self love and the empowerment to be proud of my breastfeeding journey. Attending Breastfeeding World for me was a life changing experience. For the first time I’d been a part of something I felt passion for. Even as a mother I still to that day had never seen women proudly breastfeeding in public. I always felt ashamed for even thinking about feeding my daughter without a nursing cover around other people who weren’t my husband. On that day my attitude changed for the better and I couldn’t be more thankful. I now feed my daughter without a doubt or worry in my mind, my concerns are back to revolving around my daughter instead of other peoples opinions.”

– Kat Hovey, on her BFW Guam experience

Building Breastfeeding World Awareness

<embed>https://youtu.be/r6NrRlMsldg?t=19m40s</embed>

Guåhan’s success in creating a breastfeeding friendly community lies within the work of local organizations.

This includes BATG, LLL Guam, the Guam Mama’s Breastfeeding Support Group and the many breastfeeding advocates who call Guam home. They’ve made impressive achievements in recent years.

Breastfeeding World, Guam

Just a few years ago, BATG helped Guåhan make public breastfeeding and employer support law through the Nana yan Patgon Act. They’ve helped the local hospitals commit to seeking WHO baby friendly status. They were recognized by WHO with a generous grant to help fund educational efforts of breastfeeding on island. Later, BATG would be awarded a National Recognition for Guåhan’s MagPRO Awards, the prestigious Government of Guam Employee Recognition Awards. Additionally, they’ve recently provided uniform training on breastfeeding to local hospitals and clinics. This ensures that both families and medical staff are aware of options for baby after birth, which eliminates the often quick handed prescription for formula during feedings.

A Successful Event by Community Support

We’d like to thank all the community organizations that helped to spread the word of Breastfeeding World’s First Ever Guåhan Photo Shoot. The Mommy Support Groups on Facebook have been extremely kind. Thank you, Guam Mama’s Breastfeeding Support, The Guam Mom’s Group and Guam Mommies! We’d also like to thank the Guam Daily Post for publishing the event announcement through the #MomLife Column. To KUAM, for featuring our project on the evening news. We’d also like to thank K57 radio for having us on the air to discuss the importance of empowering mothers to breastfeed. Extra special thanks to the Dept of Parks and Recs for assisting with photography permits so quickly!

We so much appreciate our local sponsors who provided awesome giveaways to our guests. Thank you to The Modern Bump  for the amazing gifts to raffle off. Thank you to Graceful Journey Doula Services, Shop Guam MomLife, and Guam Birth Boot Camp for your contributions as well!

A Very Special Thank You

Breastfeeding World, Guam

We deeply appreciate all the families that attended our event. Capturing Guam and the small portion of it’s breastfeeding community through Breastfeeding World’s Lens could not have been possible without your presence and advocacy.

Finally, at the heart of all this is Erica Farwell Photography. Erica was such a joy to work with on our short trip. She made the group shoot and individual shoots fun, friendly and relaxed. Even with babies uncomfortable from the heat, she still found a way to capture the most darling moments between mother and child. You can find her work at www.ericafarwellphotography.com. She specializes in family and senior portraits on Guam.  Fun fact: it was Erica’s first time to Latte Stone Park herself!

Welcome to Breastfeeding World, Guam!

After all was done, the shoot was much more than just an event to attend. It was an opportunity for island residents to come together. To encourage each other’s breastfeeding goals. And join the community of Breastfeeding World that extends beyond Guåhan’s shores.

The Rainbow Photo Session

As we arrived at the park on October 15th, I knew that it would be an emotional, beautiful and love-filled day. But, I did not expect the strength and the immediate bond between everyone there. It was incredible to watch, as each mother stood together, how interwoven they each were. They were bound together in an indescribable way. It was the most beautiful thing I could ever witness.

Each mother was different, each story was different, every experience was different, and yet something felt the same. As they looked at their rainbow children, the beautiful little lights of hope, you could see all of the love among them. You could feel their angels there with us, watching over them. And, you could see on the face of every mother, that they were always carrying their precious babies; even when the world wasn’t.

Mini Sessions with each of our mommas

We wanted each and every mom to have a special experience on this day. To remember and honor their babies gone too soon and acknowledge the special place their rainbow baby has in their hearts.

As they came together….

Everything about this shoot was natural and beautiful. Bound together in loss, love and motherhood, each mom radiated an incredible strength that I deeply admire.

October 15th ~ Remembrance Day

As the day of remembrance, we participated in the wave of light together. We went around and spoke each baby’s name or due date. In the darkness, we sat, looking into each glowing light, remembering the lives that each flickering candle represented. We, at Breastfeeding World, are honored to be able to participate in something so incredibly moving.

From the bottom of my heart, I would like to thank each of the wonderful mothers who offered their time, their stories and their hearts to us on this day. It means the world to be able to share this with our community and to honor your children and all of the children gone too soon. I would also like to thank Kim from Kim Max Photography for donating her time and talent to our shoot. Finally, Te-Ana Souffrant of Gem2Gen Doula services, who provided us the guidance and space to speak about loss openly and honestly. It was so wonderful to have all of you.

I also would like to show appreciate to the following small businesses who generously donated their beautiful work for our moms and their families to use as props:

Mova-Light Maternity for the beautiful Dresses

Laura Costarella, Blue Stone Sky for the Rainbow Gauze

Jena Glasgow, Lilac Blossom Boutique for the Rainbow Maternity Sash

Jen at The Ritzy Rose for the Rainbow Baby Sign

Amanda Stinnet, Pretty Girl Bow Shop for the Felt Flower Headbands

PNW Moms make history for Breastfeeding World’s first Downtown Seattle Big Latch On

There was so much excitement kicking off Breastfeeding World’s first ever west coast Big Latch On in Downtown Seattle! Moms gathered to show just how powerful the PNW community is in coming together in the name of normalizing breastfeeding.

Lots of excitement to make it happen

Like many first-ever events, hurdles that could have happened, happened. With unexpected wild fires burning in our Canadian neighbors’ forests, Seattle had been dealing with poor air quality for weeks. While there were predictions for better air that weekend, the days leading to it proved otherwise. It caused our guests to move from our initial outdoor gathering at Gas Works Park to indoors. Mothers were determined to be present at the event. They made Breastfeeding World’s Downtown Seattle Latch On successful despite the change in plans.

The Washington State Convention Center became the perfect meeting point. We were indoors, which meant a cooler location, better air quality for the children, and a safer place for toddlers to roam freely. Most importantly, a more intimate venue to meet with other guests.

Strong bonds for building a community

With just under 2 weeks of planning, the Breastfeeding World team in NYC, Martha’s Vineyard and Central Indiana coordinated their efforts to carry out Seattle’s first Latch On with ease. Each location sent over goodies for guests, swag bags and raffle items to make the event extraordinary. In the same passion for success, many guests from the Seattle event offered their hands and volunteer time for next year’s Big Latch On. It is amazing to hear complete strangers offer support, encouragement and excitement to a common mission of building a community and supporting a cause.

How does participating in the Big Latch On impact our community?

Being present and gathering for Breastfeeding World’s first Downtown Seattle Big Latch On wasn’t just a gathering of a group of women in Seattle. It also wasn’t just a four city effort of the Breastfeeding World Team. For one whole minute, we joined 18,011 other women who breastfed 17,790 children across the world at 10:30am in their respective time zones. We came together in unity with 725 other countries to stand for breastfeeding rights everywhere.

We gather each year for the Big Latch On to normalize breastfeeding. There are so many aspects of the breastfeeding struggle in society that we see daily. This yearly event marks one day which is celebratory for all involved. We can gather, share stories of breastfeeding journeys, and provide resources and encouragement. Most of all, it brings awareness to our communities. It shines a light on the importance of breastfeeding for child, for mom and for our families.

Events like the Downtown Seattle Big Latch On help mothers celebrate the natural act of breastfeeding. By doing so, it helps normalize breastfeeding for society, to see it as an important part of motherhood and a child’s development. It is from events like the Seattle Big Latch On that cities are able to make legislative movement to protect mothers who breastfeed in public. It also makes movement to give Employers the sense to provide and care for breastfeeding mothers who return to work.

Breastfeeding World embodies this movement daily. We’re so glad to have Downtown Seattle added to the list of cities our growing community can turn to for our events.

Moments captured remain the highlight of the day

The most beautiful elements of Breastfeeding World and Downtown Seattle’s Big Latch On are the photos. Phosphorus Photography‘s Ashley Ohlson Stramp is our Featured Photographer who captured the bonding of families at the event. She was amazing at creating the images that Breastfeeding World stands for. She captured the perfect bond between mother and child, the fun between new found friends and the enjoyment of others who gather in support of an important cause.

Many mothers resonated the same sentiment of Breastfeeding World hosting a Seattle location. They were extremely happy and thrilled to find a Big Latch On in Seattle. Families traveled from across the sound, north and south Seattle and from towns an hour or more away. A family on vacation from California attended the event as well, which brought great  insight to how strong the breastfeeding community is across our state borders.

We were so happy to meet each and every guest that day. Your presence means so much to Breastfeeding World and we’re going to be growing our community to make a larger and much more impactful Big Latch On next year!
