On August 4th we celebrated our 4th annual Big Latch ON in the heart of New York City. Twenty -five breastfeeding mothers took over Times Square once again. This year’s event was far more special than all the previous ones for one very particular reason: it was pouring.

During the past four years of Breastfeeding World hosting the most iconic Big Latch On in Times Square and our family gatherings in Bryant Park we have been very lucky with the weather.

Almost every year the forecast says rain and because of the nature of the latch on we always decide to do it rain or shine. Our past events have been a real success and both parents and kiddos have enjoyed themselves very much. This year was no different except for the fact that we had a torrential downpour.

Empowering women lead with example and clear actions

Rain did not stop New York City mothers from coming together. Starting 9:30 am we congregated mothers to join us at the TKTS steps in Times Square, together with our team of volunteers we joined them hoping that the rain would clear.

We knew for a fact that many who had planned on coming to our iconic big latch on were not going to be able to make it due to the weather conditions but we were hopeful.

Despite the many setbacks that included train delays and more, these 25 New York City moms with their babes and other family members joined us to make history once again.

At approximately 10:05 am the rain cleared to allow us to host the actual latch on. With the guidance of our founder, Alexia Garcia and her Alegares Photography team our beautiful, strong and empowering breastfeeding mothers took over Times Square and came together right in front of the TKTS to join the global count of breastfeeding women worldwide.

By 10:45 am it started drizzling once again giving us the queue to take cover under the nearest awning right before the next downpour. Although we did our very best to make it to Bryant Park for our well known and enjoyed family gathering it was not possible and we had to say our goodbye shortly after the latch.

It was extremely rewarding getting to know each and everyone of our attendees, seeing them smile and most importantly, seeing how strong, passionate and encouraging they all were. It’s been a please throughout these past 4 years seeing little ones grow and families extend but it has been amazing having new families joining us as well.

Our breastfeeding mothers took over Times Square, will it happen again?

As you may all know by now, the New York Post was the media outlet that sent out a photographer and reporter to our event. When we got their phone call inquiring about our 4th annual NYC Big Latch On we were excited to have them join us. However, after the latch-on happened they posted their article and to our surprise it was very misleading.

“Dozens of Moms stage Breastfeeding PROTEST in Times Square”.

That is the headline. That is description of mainstream media regarding public breastfeeding at the NYC Big Latch On event we had this past Saturday. And that is unfortunately the perspective of our society. (To read their article click here)

As moms and breastfeeding advocates, having conversations with others who disagree with nursing in public can go two ways: it can become an educational moment or an argument. We prefer to have dialogue for education, which is the whole purpose of Breastfeeding World and our participation in the Big Latch On.

Let us use this article to share that we are no longer “protesting” for breastfeeding rights or nursing in public, because if you haven’t yet heard, US law has finally passed in all 50 states to protect the NATURAL rights of mothers from being charged with indecent exposure when nursing in public spaces.

Instead, we’re using this article to show that even though we have achieved the support of our government to protect mom and her baby’s right to feed in public spaces and in the work place, there is still much work to be done in making breastfeeding in public the NORM in society. 

We’ve made so much progress, let’s keep it going so that our children can breastfeeding without scrutiny, so that other moms can feel confident in their choice to breastfeeding where they please, so that we can have less ignorant comments towards breastfeeding mothers.

I feel like good quality, all-natural skin and body care that is affordable (and that works!) is hard to find, but I may have just found just that in Fabula Nebulae!

When one of the organizers of Breastfeeding World reaches out to you and asks you to do a product review for a skincare company, you say yes! I mean who would say no to free (and hopefully fabulous) self-care! 😉 A few weeks went by and then I received the package I had been waiting for. I opened it only to be very surprised by what was inside.

I am not quite sure what I was expecting, but I was pleasantly surprised to find a natural deodorant and skin salve.

I started using it that very next day.

I have to tell you that I live in Texas and its knee deep in an awfully hot summer right now (we are talking 106-108 degrees without the heat index!). So, I was really going to be able to put this to the test. I have now been using it for over a week with amazing results.

Not once have I been stinky. Not once. I have been so very impressed with this deodorant.

It doesn’t irritate my skin like some of the other natural ones have, the scent is very light (almost non-existent), and it really works. I have yet to wear it with a white or light-colored shirt that has sleeves though, so I am still interested to see if it would discolor them when I do. I will be sure to include this in my follow-up post about these products!

It was almost as if they knew exactly what I needed right then!

First, the packaging. It was simple and understated, and fit the products perfectly. Each of the two products were wrapped individually and a note about their company, Fabula Nebulae, and products was included. I

loved their motto, “farm to tub naturals.”

This really spoke to me and I was excited to try both products! If you use natural products, you know how challenging it can be to find an all-natural deodorant that actually works. I was surprised to see that when I opened this one, it was a dark gray. I was a little hesitant, to be honest, because I was worried it might stain or leave that color behind on my clothes.

The second product was a skin calming salve.

While I was out taking pictures of the products and their packaging for this post, an ant was nice enough to bite my arm.

I instantly applied Quiet the Storm.

It helped with the stinging and itching right away. I did re-apply throughout the day, but it was able to keep it at bay when I did so. I also started to apply it to a few dry spots I get here and there, and it seemed to help them as well. Again, the scent with this product too is very light, almost a bit citrusy. I really like it! It also goes on very smooth and absorbs with no oil or residue left behind.

All-in-all I really like these products so far.

I will definitely continue to use them both, and plan on checking out their other products as well.

Breastfeeding Must Haves

I remember seeing a .gif online about making it through the first three months of breastfeeding. The .gif implied that it starts getting easier after six weeks, and one you make it to three months, breastfeeding is smooth sailing.

It’s true that as much as you cherish the bond and connection with your newborn that breastfeeding brings, breastfeeding is hard in the beginning. It’s exhausting at times, frustrating at others, and even downright painful.

But, there are some amazing products that can help ease all of that….products I couldn’t have lived without!

1. The Luna Lullaby Bosom Baby Nursing Pillow –

I cannot say enough good things about this pillow! Due to an extremely powerful let down and overproduction, the football hold was our go-to when nursing. This pillow was perfect for that and every other hold we tried and used, unlike some of the other nursing pillows out there. It also had a removable, washable cover that was super soft and cuddly. We used this pillow for napping together and tummy time as well!

2. Simple Wishes Signature Hands Free Pumping Bra –

I honestly don’t know what I would have done without this bra! Pumping was necessary and unavoidable, but this bra make it so much easier. Whether I was at home and needed to have my hands to tend to my son, or after I returned to work and needed to be grading or typing while I pumped, this bra gave me the freedom to have both of my hands free. It has removable straps, but I honestly never used them because you can adjust the tightness of the bra and I was able to keep it held up that way. It is also machine washable and held up to two years of washings! It’s also super soft!

3. Nursing tanks –

I don’t know what I would have done without these! My absolute favorites were from Target, but the simply sublime tank from Kindred Bravely is also super soft and functional.  I love how they had ones that had built in bras that could be worn under other tops, but also had pretty ones that were also just tops you could wear on their own. I have to save that mine all held up for over three years of constant wear and washing and drying. Nursing tanks make nursing and pumping so much easier whether we were at home or out!

4. Nursing pads –

These were a must have, a cannot leave home without them in! I tended to spray or leak and these saved me so many times! I used a few different types of nursing pads; plain white cotton ones that could be washed and dried. But I also used Lansinoh and Target ones,  and a few Bamboobies. I tended to lean towards the cotton ones the most, followed by the disposable ones. The cotton pads seemed to hold the most, and they also were the most comfortable to wear. But for being out and about, and not having the time or ability to change out the washable ones, the disposable pads were great too!

5. An Insulated Cup –

There are so many pretty cups out there or ones that will keep drinks cold for well over twenty-four hours, but my go-tos were the two I brought home from the hospital. They were insulated, had a handle and a straw. I found the handle and straw to be non-negotiable while pumping and nursing. They made taking a drink and holding the cup so much easier! Whether it was water, coconut water, NUUN, or anything in between, if I was pumping or nursing, I was hydrating as well!

While this list is definitely not all inclusive, these are some of the key items I found helpful in the beginning and throughout our journey.

I know there have been some amazing new products released recently too like the Freemie Pumping System and the Silicone Breastfeeding Milk Catcher, like the Haakaathat moms are raving about. It’s so amazing to see that moms are getting more of the support and help they need with innovations and products like these!

I have to admit we still have the Luna Lullaby pillow and we still use it even though we have finished our breastfeeding journey. Nothing like the nostalgia it stirs up when we are cuddling on it together…I might just need to hold onto it forever! 🙂

Especially now that I am a mom. Especially, especially during the holidays.

One stop shopping:

I need a place where I can buy something for everyone. The idea of going to multiple stores when they are all packed out with people, with two kids in tow, while nearly 8 months pregnant… in the snow and cold, is literally the most miserable thing in the universe. While I love shopping for a special gift for every special person in my life, I also like my sanity. So, if I can go to one place and get everyone a gift; that is now my new favorite place.

Personal, special gifts:

So, remember how I said I like my sanity? Well, I am totally about to contradict myself. I love me a one stop shop, but the desire to give someone special, something special to show them that I love and care about them, wins, more often then not. Naturally, I find myself going to the end of the Earth to get that extra special perfect gift.

Online shopping:

Many times, I find myself solving my personal, special gifts desire (problem is probably a better word here), with online shopping. My Etsy recent orders list is a mile long, pretty much at all times. But, it is not always easy to shop on Etsy, especially when you are short on time.

Recently, we did some giveaways here at Breastfeeding World, for our Week of Thanks. It was so incredibly fun and I was given the opportunity to try out one of our giveaway prizes.

Our Green House gave me a $50 credit to make my own gift basket.

As I created my own gift basket…

I found an incredible range of items that I could choose from. Now, while I am very interested in giving gifts to others, I definitely wanted these goodies for myself! Hey, I am allowed, I am welcoming a new little in February. Don’t judge me.

Organic clothing, soaps, baby toys, nursery décor, I could go on! And, you were able to choose what to send all of the goodies in, a cute basket, tote, or a simple box. I was blown away at the idea that I could make a special, personal gift basket with such variety. You choose your price point, you choose the basket, you choose what goes inside, you even choose the ribbon. And then… they put it together for you. Mail it for you. It is everything that a busy momma like me, who still has that desire to give something special to someone special, needs in life.

Seriously, I loved it!

With a super user friendly website, I was able to browse different categories, based on size, color, décor style, theme, or type of item. But, even though it was user friendly, it was not easy to narrow down what I wanted because everything was SO CUTE. Which is a good problem to have. You literally could give a hundred gifts and never gift the same one twice. I mean really, that is awesome.

Babies have this way of just showing up whenever they want (I mean, don’t they take us planners into consideration!?). Which makes it difficult to give a personal gift in a timely fashion without paying your salary in rush charges. Just another reason I thoroughly enjoyed this experience. I took my time, decided on what I wanted, despite many interruptions from my little darlings, and really put care into choosing each piece for my sweet new arrival, all to have it appear within a few days, beautifully packaged for a flat $4.95 shipping rate (YES! To flat rate shipping!).

When I was given this $50 credit, I was not sure what to expect, as I had not heard of Our Green House before. I was beyond pleasantly surprised and Our Green House has just gained a loyal customer in me. Today I want to share with you an awesome company, Kindred Bravely.

Kindred Bravely is a company devoted to creating maternity and postpartum clothes that are effortlessly chic and beautiful, while still being comfy and practical.

Founded by Deeanne Akerson, who was sick of all of the impractical and often times, ugly, maternity wear (especially for breastfeeding moms). She set out to make a change, and Kindred Bravely was born. She wants moms to look and feel great all the time. I love how Deeanne describes her clothing line; “Our clothes have been meticulously designed to make your superhero journey easier.”
Our Team at Breastfeeding World leaped at the opportunity to collaborate with Kindred Bravely to pull of the most epic Big Latch On Events in NYC, Times Square, Central Indiana, and Martha’s Vineyard.
As a mom to an eight month old boy, I understand how difficult it is to find the “perfect” nursing bra or an adorable nursing set that you feel comfortable flaunting around the house in front of close friends and family. The struggle is real…well, until I found about out KB.

To test out some of the products first hand, Kindred Bravely sent me two nursing bras and two pajama sets- one was with long pants and the other shorts.

When it comes to bras, I never seem to get it right. I find that every bra fits differently. I feel like every bra is a different size, in every new bra style that I choose from. Does this ever happen to you too? When KB asked me what size to send me, I was a little hesitant that yet again, they wouldn’t fit me right or be uncomfortable. Man, was I pleasantly surprised.  When I received my package in the mail, I instantly ran over to grab my phone to do an ‘insta-unpackaging story’ -because obviously everyone on my Instagram had to know about this 😉

The first thing that grabbed my attention when I opened the pack of bras, was the feeling of the fabric.

I have never owned a bra that felt that soft. Kindred Bravely Sent me the Simply Sublime Nursing Bra in beige and the Marvella Nursing Plunge “T-Shirt” Bra in black. Now, you may think that what I am about to say is just ‘a way to get you to buy these products’ – truth be told, it is not. I put on the Marvella Bra first and instantly shouted out loud,
“OMG finalllllly!!! This bra is amazzzzing!”
My husband looked at me like I had two heads. I kid you not, I did a little dance around our living room. I had never experienced a bra like this. Usually bras are so uncomfortable for me or like I said, never fit, but this bra was magical. It fit PERFECT!
Since I received both bras, I haven’t worn any other. They fit great, are super comfortable and convenient for nursing mamas- being that the straps snap off for easy access. You can tell right away that KB made both bras with high quality fabrics.The soft and stretchy nylon makes them feel almost like you aren’t even wearing a bra at all!

The Marvella bra has a criss-cross back.

I love its wire-free design and how comfortable it feels on my chest. After trying on this bra, I now realize that I am willing to pay a little more to get the better quality. This bra offers great support and is very appealing to the eye. The Marvella sells for $39 and comes in a variety of colors.

In comparison, the sublime bra is a great everyday bra to wear to work.

The ladies at Kindred Bravely were kind enough to send me two pajamas sets to try out as well.

I have slept in them every night since they arrived two weeks ago. They are probably the softest pajamas I have ever owned. Now I feel spoiled! The pant set that I received came in long pants and shorts. The shorts are perfect for summer and the top is silky smooth on my skin. They are also super cute and I would be totally comfortable wearing them around friends & family. The material for these pajamas are super stretchy which is great for pregnant mamas. I wish I had these pajamas when I was pregnant- perfect for a growing belly!
