Having mommy and me costumes is family tradition that has been around for quite a while. For us, it’s quite new but we are loving it!

Nowadays some parents may find that coming up with fun ideas to keep your kids entertained can be quite challenging. With tablets, phones and other electronics around it can be really difficult to spark creativity on some children. Can you relate?

As some of you may know, I happen to be a big Harry Potter fan. When I found out I was pregnant I started to put together some ideas for a #Potterhead theme session for my baby girl. It only took us 5 years to get it done but guess what?! We did it and it came out perfect!

Mischief Managed – Our very first Mommy and Me Costumes

We had recently returned from our very first Salem trip and boy we had fun. Having been able to visit this well known historical site right before Halloween helped spike her desire to dress up as a cute little witch. We had just started reading the Philosopher’s Stone so it was just the perfect timing.

I still remember her excitement when we unwrapped our somewhat matching mommy and me costumes. Little miss D was so happy to know that her mommy would also be wearing the same Harry Potter cloak. After a good ol’ Harry Potter marathon to gather a storyline idea, we were ready to go.

Although Halloween is not a part of my culture, I decided that it’s a great Holiday to be creative together. We both enjoy getting our makeup done and coming up with some amazing photos that we will cherish forever.

Creating magical images through my photography is one of my favorite things to do, therefore, we both have a lot of fun working on these together.

Little miss D happened to have been working on her Felix Felices potion when all of a sudden, a death eater appeared ready to take it all away. She needed to protect her coveted potion! Armed with all the spells she had learned in her first year at Hogwarts she was able to guard her cauldron.

Our newfound tradition continues

This year was no different! The moment that all the Halloween decorations started to appear in the stores, (I’ve got to admit, a bit too early for my liking!). We were all over them.

Originally, we thought of dressing up as the Power Rangers, because, why not? However, after some thoughtful consideration we wanted a mommy and me costume that would allow us to enjoy and enhance the beautiful fall scenery on the island.

She had heard a children’s song that I’m sure many of you have heard as well…

“Scarecrow, scarecrow turn around;

Scarecrow, scarecrow touch the ground.

Scarecrow, scarecrow reach up high;

Scarecrow, scarecrow bend down low,

Scarecrow, scarecrow touch your toes.”

With that song in mind we began our search for our perfect mommy and me costumes and I got to say, she picked them right! After a quick Pinterest search for some scarecrow makeup ideas we were ready to go!

We were very lucky to have had three loved ones that helped us pull this 2019 Halloween session together, Shelyn, Ianna & Martin. Thank you!

The process of picking out a theme, choosing our mommy and me costumes and creating the images together has been a great way to push both our creativities to the next level. We shall see what next year brings. In the meantime, we will see you in town trick-or-treating!

If you have never tried doing something like this for Halloween then I surely recommend taking the time and letting your imagination flow! I can promise you and you and your little ones will have so much fun together.

What is your favorite Halloween movie that you and your family like? Have you guys every mommy and me costumes?

There is certainly a feeling of extreme joy and excitement whenever you decide to start following your dreams. Listening to that voice in your head pushing you forward is freeing… Can you relate?

For months, I’ve been mulling the idea of documenting one of the most empowering moments in a mother’s life. Her child’s birth!

Taking back my creative outlet…

When I moved back to live on Martha’s Vineyard, I had to find a way to make ends meet. I was lucky enough to have found a full time job in a place that I absolutely love. For the past three years, my main focus has been to grow in my professional career while keeping up with motherhood.

This new found lifestyle meant that as much as I wanted to continue on with Breastfeeding World, as dedicated as I was before, it was practically impossible. After our most recent Big Latch On event in Times Square this past August 4th, I realized that something needed to change… Me.

Breastfeeding World has allowed me to get to know many many families. Since its conception back in 2013 I’ve been able to photograph over 150 mothers/families from different countries, ethnicities and beliefs. The best part of it all is that I’ve been able to learn about their parenthood journeys.

You know that feeling of pure accomplishment, wonder, passion, pride and happiness? That is what photography has meant to me since the day I grabbed my first camera. For the past three years my photography business has been somewhat dormant, just “a hobby for when I had time”. That phase has now come to an end.

Join us in our new and exciting endeavor our Martha’s Vineyard Birth Story Model Calls

My desire to continue documenting your family’s milestones with creativity, care and love has taken over. It’s time to take back your birthing experience and we can document every part of it together!

I’ve decided to host a Martha’s Vineyard Birth Story Model Call. I’d like to offer island families a chance to document this special loving day. These photo sessions are discounted to allow Breastfeeding World to introduce its photography services on the island.

Standby Martha’s Vineyard Birth Story Model Call

Birth photography is story telling of the moments that lead up to your baby’s arrival and afterwards.  The moment when you summoned up the strength to keep going after you believed you had reached your limit.  The moment when your partner expressed love, care and appreciation for what you were enduring to deliver your baby. The moments when your support team stepped in.  And finally, the moment when your baby first arrived into the world. The expression on your face and on your partner’s face when you first laid eyes on your newest family member!

Standby birth photography means that I’m not on-call.  This means that although I will not clear my calendar as I would if I was “on-call” (where I would have no other events scheduled from week 38-42 of your pregnancy) I will have my phone on me and available to you within reason based of my previous commitments.

There is no commitment for you to sign a contract or pay the full session fee until you call to tell me that you are in labor and I arrive. You will receive copy of all the documents to be signed prior to your due date so you can read through it ahead of time.

Our 5th annual Big Latch On in Times Square took place this past Saturday August 3rd during World Breastfeeding Week. It was probably one of the most amazing ones I've ever had.

About five years ago, the concept of showcasing how natural and beautiful breastfeeding is started. For a few weeks I went on and on, thinking how I could achieve this while still being able to share the different experiences that mothers had. That is when the Breastfeeding World photo project took place.

For approximately 2 months, I dedicated myself to capturing beautiful breastfeeding portraits. I had the opportunity of meeting over 60 New York City mothers who participated in the first photo call. We went to different iconic locations throughout New York City and photographed these beautiful women, nursing their little ones in public. It was epic!

Breastfeeding World was quickly becoming a resource of inspiration and support for our local moms. Yet, there was still so much to be done. In the beginning of July of 2015 one of our photo session participants and beloved friend, Lisa Maloney, had a crazy idea: “Let’s hold a Breastfeeding World Big Latch On in Times Square”, she said.

Sharing the Breastfeeding Love one event at a time

Breastfeeding World's first Big Latch On in Times Square. August 2015

With a month to prepare and a whole lot of sleepless nights, I was leading the Breastfeeding World’s team. We planned and executed one of the most iconic Big Latch On events that have ever happened: 69 nursing mothers came together in Times Square to breastfeed their little ones in support.

This was the beginning of five full years of annual breastfeeding events. We took our celebrations from NYC to several other states, including two countries: Guam and Ecuador.

Our Breastfeeding Celebrations have gathered strong women who have gotten the opportunity to meet like-minded families, and support each other’s journeys. Strong friendships have developed. But most importantly, a sense of empowerment has surrounded each and every one of our events.

Back in 2016, I had to relocate to Massachusetts. Although organizing these events seemed impossible, we pulled it off each and every year. Thanks to our Breastfeeding World Volunteers our events took form and place. Our focus has always remained the same: to bring our mothering community together. Supporting and encouraging each other in our breastfeeding journeys has been one of our main goals.

Breastfeeding World – a community of love

These past two years have been a real challenge for Breastfeeding World. As the leader, I have encountered a few personal “blocks” along the way. Making it difficult to keep up.

In 2017 a professional development opportunity arose, and I took it. I was promoted to department supervisor in the local hospital I work at. To say that juggling motherhood, school activities, being a full-time working mom, managing Breastfeeding World and the overall ups and downs of life has been difficult, is a BIG understatement!

In 2018, Breastfeeding World underwent a few transitions: a shift in its volunteer team, a website re-design as well as the expansion of our events to Guam & Ecuador. It was not easy, but we did it.

Then this year came…

As much as I love Breastfeeding World and all that it stands for, I was overwhelmed with having to juggle all of the responsibilities I already had. I made up my mind that there was no way our annual breastfeeding celebration would happen this year. It was not until my dear friend Lisa Maloney, and my fellow BFW co-founders, brother Christian and mother Bella Garcia called me that I started re-thinking it.

Lisa reminded me that we are all humans, as mothers we can only do so much. She also reminded me of all the beautiful reasons why Breastfeeding World has significantly grown. As well as all the help and support it has provided to so many around the world. Instead of judging me for feeling overwhelmed and somewhat powerless, she embraced me with encouragement.

"Your eyes gleam with excitement when you talk about the BFW events," said another friend of mine.

After this small intervention of love and deep understanding, I came to the realization that our Breastfeeding World celebrations needed to happen. Not because of me, but because of the lives that it would impact. Even my sweet baby girl (who’s not a baby anymore) said: “Mami, I can’t wait to work in our BFW event”.

Just like five years ago: with a little over a month to go, I started promoting the event. With non payed 2019 sponsors, very limited financial resources, but a whole lot of willingness and love, my family and I traveled from Massachusetts to NYC for our…

To some, this year’s event might’ve been way smaller and a whole lot different from previous years. For me, this year’s event was one of the most powerful ones yet. Despite the challenges faced, I was once again able to touch the lives of the amazing NYC mothers that attended our 5th annual Big Latch On in Times Square.

This event was intimate. It was beautiful, and extremely empowering. Our 5th annual Big Latch On in Times Square was a true demonstration of love and commitment. It reminded me that Breastfeeding World is a community of love and real appreciation for one another.

I was excited seeing some old faces that have grown with us. But it was also very fun getting to know new mommies and daddies who were thrilled to be a part of something so big, yet small at the same time. Babies as little as 10 days old came to celebrate with us this unique event. It was so refreshing seeing 2 & 3 year old nurslings who were more than happy to be having their "milkies, tities, tatas".

An event to remember, an event to cherish

"Meeting in Times Square to breastfeed with all the other moms that traveled from near and far, was such an inspiring event. We all had separate challenges but we pushed through them making it to that moment on the TKTS stairs to nourish our little ones. Getting the opportunity to nurse together made me a little emotional as I connected with other moms and we discussed our experiences. I left feeling empowered, understood and supported.” – Susie Davies Concelmo, 2019 NYC BLO participant.

"It was a beautiful gathering! To see so many women immediately able to strike up conversations, to have so many content babies and children all gathered together is a statement to how natural and nurturing the breastfeeding journey is.” – Cassandra Addams, 2019 NYC BLO participant.

"This was my second year coming out. It was wonderful to meet with familiar and new faces. There’s just something about being with other women, (and men!), taking pride and standing firm in breastfeeding. It creates this great space of empowerment and resolve you can take home with you to use to continue to dispel stigma and pressure to not publicly breastfeed.

It was great to be in that energy. All of the dads got to bond and feel pride in the breastfeeding journey and their important involvement as supporters, and well, as dads! We got to see other families with older tots and kids too. Seeing a generation of breastfed kiddies growing up and flourishing was heartwarming and inspirational.

This is the kind of event that really showcases how breastfeeding isn’t an isolated thing. On the contrary, it's something that involves and positively affects the whole family because it positively affects the children.” – Teena Botan, 2019 NYC BLO participant.

My deepest gratitude to you all

Breastfeeding World began after I became a mother to my beautiful baby girl. It began after I was told: “we don’t do ‘THAT’ in here,” while shopping in a children’s clothing store in the UWS. It began after I felt powerless and disoriented by the double standards surrounding a women’s body. It began after I felt the need to be the voice of many through my photography. It began because of each and every one of you, so, THANK YOU.

Our breastfeeding journey lasted 4.5 years, it was not easy but it was worth it! - ©Alegares Photography

Throughout these past five years, Breastfeeding World has given me a reason to keep on going and pushing forward despite the many obstacles. Although my daughter and I stopped breastfeeding at 4.5 years, I feel that my “nursing relationship” with BFW is still going on (if you know what I mean!). That strong bond and connection we share, grows deeper every day. Despite my imperfections as its “mother,” I feel that BFW has been able to thrive because of you.

Our commitment to empowering women around the world is what keeps us going day to day. Breastfeeding World will continue moving forward and just like our individual motherhood journeys. We will continue sharing the breastfeeding love one day at a time. So, hold on tight! Are you ready for our epic ride?

I would LOVE to hear your thoughts. What would you like to see more of in the future from Breastfeeding World? Please share them in the comment section below!.

Don't forget! Check out our social media pages to keep up with the breastfeeding love.

On August 4th we celebrated our 4th annual Big Latch ON in the heart of New York City. Twenty -five breastfeeding mothers took over Times Square once again. This year’s event was far more special than all the previous ones for one very particular reason: it was pouring.

During the past four years of Breastfeeding World hosting the most iconic Big Latch On in Times Square and our family gatherings in Bryant Park we have been very lucky with the weather.

Almost every year the forecast says rain and because of the nature of the latch on we always decide to do it rain or shine. Our past events have been a real success and both parents and kiddos have enjoyed themselves very much. This year was no different except for the fact that we had a torrential downpour.

Empowering women lead with example and clear actions

Rain did not stop New York City mothers from coming together. Starting 9:30 am we congregated mothers to join us at the TKTS steps in Times Square, together with our team of volunteers we joined them hoping that the rain would clear.

We knew for a fact that many who had planned on coming to our iconic big latch on were not going to be able to make it due to the weather conditions but we were hopeful.

“The rain isn’t stopping me!!!” – Samantha Flores

“We will be there, a little rain won’t scare us away.” – Jessica Hertzog

Despite the many setbacks that included train delays and more, these 25 New York City moms with their babes and other family members joined us to make history once again.

Our iconic Big Latch On was really meant to be

At approximately 10:05 am the rain cleared to allow us to host the actual latch on. With the guidance of our founder, Alexia Garcia and her Alegares Photography team our beautiful, strong and empowering breastfeeding mothers took over Times Square and came together right in front of the TKTS to join the global count of breastfeeding women worldwide.

“We are extremely proud of all our NYC moms who joined us in our 4th Annual NYC Big Latch On. We are extremely grateful to these women/mothers who, despite of the pouring rain, came down to be a part of the historic count!

For the mamas who couldn’t make it or who didn’t get there on time, you know you were with us in spirit, we represented you all with love! This was MEANT to be and we DID it! This was EMPOWERMENT at its finest!” – Alexia Garcia, Breastfeeding World Founder

By 10:45 am it started drizzling once again giving us the queue to take cover under the nearest awning right before the next downpour. Although we did our very best to make it to Bryant Park for our well known and enjoyed family gathering it was not possible and we had to say our goodbye shortly after the latch.

It was extremely rewarding getting to know each and everyone of our attendees, seeing them smile and most importantly, seeing how strong, passionate and encouraging they all were. It’s been a please throughout these past 4 years seeing little ones grow and families extend but it has been amazing having new families joining us as well.

Our breastfeeding mothers took over Times Square, will it happen again?

As you may all know by now, the New York Post was the media outlet that sent out a photographer and reporter to our event. When we got their phone call inquiring about our 4th annual NYC Big Latch On we were excited to have them join us. However, after the latch-on happened they posted their article and to our surprise it was very misleading.

“Dozens of Moms stage Breastfeeding PROTEST in Times Square”.

That is the headline. That is description of mainstream media regarding public breastfeeding at the NYC Big Latch On event we had this past Saturday. And that is unfortunately the perspective of our society. (To read their article click here)

As moms and breastfeeding advocates, having conversations with others who disagree with nursing in public can go two ways: it can become an educational moment or an argument. We prefer to have dialogue for education, which is the whole purpose of Breastfeeding World and our participation in the Big Latch On.

Let us use this article to share that we are no longer “protesting” for breastfeeding rights or nursing in public, because if you haven’t yet heard, US law has finally passed in all 50 states to protect the NATURAL rights of mothers from being charged with indecent exposure when nursing in public spaces.

Instead, we’re using this article to show that even though we have achieved the support of our government to protect mom and her baby’s right to feed in public spaces and in the work place, there is still much work to be done in making breastfeeding in public the NORM in society.

We’ve made so much progress, let’s keep it going so that our children can breastfeeding without scrutiny, so that other moms can feel confident in their choice to breastfeeding where they please, so that we can have less ignorant comments towards breastfeeding mothers.

What is our response to this article headline? We’re sharing our move with our Facebook group members. And it’s going to be BIG. Join your Breastfeeding World mama tribe in your region today, let’s get the action started!

New York City is where Breastfeeding World began, to us this amazing beautiful city is full of magic and dreams come true.

This past April 7th our dearest friend Molly Ades from Soul Ma invited me to join her and the rest of our beloved NYC mamas at the 2018 MommyCon. With much excitement we initiated the trip back home and decided that during our time there we would be hosting one of our iconic NYC’s Breastfeeding World Photo sessions.

During these past few years that I’ve had the opportunity of photographing women from so many different backgrounds I’ve learned that less is better. I’ve always wanted to showcase the essence of what breastfeeding looks like in their daily lives and this was not going to be any different.

NYC’s Breastfeeding World, empowering women one picture at a time

Motherhood itself can be challenging, being a nursing mother in a super busy city is not as easy as it may seem. Standing up for the normalization of breastfeeding in public can be intimidating but doing it with a group of women that you know support you and share your same goal is truly empowering.

Breastfeeding is natural, breastfeeding is pure, breastfeeding is love…

Kimmy Meyer

“Breastfeeding was something I knew I definitely would do for my baby. I don’t remember when I made that decision along my journey of pregnancy, but I knew that I didn’t want to formula feed. I read a ton of books while pregnant which made me aware of all the amazing things breastfeeding can provide for my baby.

One of the best books I read was La Leche League’s book, “The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding.” I decided to breastfeed because I read about all the health benefits my son gets from breastmilk. His health is a top priority to me so this just made sense. I love the bond we’ve created now from breastfeeding as he’s been exclusively breastfed now for 6 months.” – Kimmy Meyer

#DidYouKnow New York State was the first state in the nation to pass a law protecting a mother’s right to breastfeed in public.

It is a civil rights law, NY CLS Civ R 79-e (Article 7 Miscellaneous Provisions).

1994 NY ALS 98; 1994 NY LAWS 98; 1994 NYSN 3999 79-e Right to Breast Feed. Not with standing any other provision of law, a mother may breastfeed her baby in any location, public or private, where the mother is otherwise authorized to be, irrespective of whether or not the nipple of the mother’s breast is covered during or incidental to the breast feeding.

Sometimes pictures that have less of a “production” per say encompass more of the reality. One of the many blessings I’ve had with creating this beautiful platform and seeing it grow is having met many families that throughout these years have grown together with us and who have formed strong and personal relationships as well as amazing friendships.

Lissette, Ralph and little Lola

During NYC’s Breastfeeding World photo session I had the chance of seeing this amazing family again. They’ve accompanied us since our very first NYC Big Latch On back in 2015.

Seeing Lola grow up and knowing her mom’s determination for breastfeeding has given me so much joy.

“When I was pregnant, my original goal was to breastfeed at least 6 months. That was very hopeful for me because I came from a large family where there was always a new baby around but breastfeeding was not something that was usually celebrated or encouraged. I was happy to find support in my sister, who became well versed in the benefits of breastfeeding through her job at a W.I.C. Office.

I found more support in various facebook groups, which lead me to the 1st NYC Big Latch On event. Where I found so much enlightenment that I resolved to breastfeed as long as it was best for my daughter and I. During this photo shoot, I was very emotional because seeing other moms nursing their younger babies made me realize how I took for granted how amazing being able to breastfeed for this long truly is. How much comfort and love my child still finds in nursing 3 and a half years later.

How we made it all the way here from not even being able to get a latch and having to give her a couple ounces of formula when she was first born. All the panic from those early days, erased by an amazing breastfeeding relationship nearly 4 years later.” – Lissette Perez

Liza Price

During NYC’s Breastfeeding World photo session we had the tremendous pleasure of seeing this mama return. Liza participated in our photo project back in 2014 with her little Reuben. This year we had the opportunity to meet her second baby boy who gave us so many smiles and reminded us why we started and why we keep on going.

“I always knew I wanted to breastfeed. My mother breastfed both my brothers and I so it just seemed natural to me. I never realized how stressful and sometimes painful it would be in the beginning, but I had my mother and my best friend who also breastfed her daughter to encourage and help me along the way.

Joseph and I are now 19 months in with no plans on stopping until he self-weans. I love the bond that was forged through breastfeeding and wouldn’t have it any other way.”- Raquel Sandino

Christiana Manson

For Christiana and her cute baby girl nursing in public without a cover felt a bit intimidating. Being a New York City mama she had done it several times but never felt quite at ease.

When I invited her to join NYC’s Breastfeeding World photo session, I was confident that experiencing this sisterhood of like-minded mamas who welcome and support each other would encourage her. Soon after we started our photo session Christiana was a pro!.

Thank you for believing in us but most importantly, thank you for believing in yourself!

“My breastfeeding journey has been really easy from the very beginning. I went to two breastfeeding courses at my birth center when I was pregnant so I felt prepared.

On the day I gave birth, my daughter latched on right away and I had another lactation coach that helped and gave me some tips. I never felt any pain and it has always been one of the best moments that my daughter and I share.

Breastfeeding is also extremely convenient and helped me get some sleep in the beginning when my daughter was still adjusting to life outside the womb.

I really enjoyed our photo session it was sooo empowering being photographed while breastfeeding when people treat breastfeeding like it’s something that needs to be done in the dark as if it’s shameful.

I Loved being the center of attention in a busy intersection it was almost poetic. By doing the photoshoot I was saying Breastfeeding is Not Shameful! Instead it is so beautiful it should be photographed!

I always intended to breastfeed. My mother did and had a good experience breastfeeding. Her experience and the way she talked about breastfeeding as natural and normal definitely impacted my thoughts on breastfeeding. Thank you mom!” – Christiana Manson

This past August 4th Breastfeeding World celebrated its Second Annual Big Latch On on Martha’s Vineyard.

Thanks to the wonderful participation of our community members we were able to beat our 2016 record by having 21 nursing mothers join us in the synchronized latch on at 10:30 am as well as a total of 60 attendees.

Months of planning and organizing brought yet another successful event to our island community with our goal of promoting but most importantly supporting our local breastfeeding moms.

Each year Breastfeeding World works hard to be able to bring breastfeeding awareness and support through our web portal, our photography project as well as our successful events. With out teams of volunteers we strive to give back to our local communities by giving them the opportunity to enjoy a day to celebrate breastfeeding, to share their experiences and to meet other mommies that are going through the same.

“My favorite part was meeting so many amazing moms, hearing their stories and being able to breastfeed comfortably with no judgment.” – said Jessica Mawjeski  a 2017 MV Attendee.

The best part of our events is that we not only integrate our moms and dads but also other family members. A good support system for a nursing mother is extremely important for her success, specially during the first few months after giving birth.

Enjoying it for the second year in a row….

This year we were extremely happy seeing familiar faces that had previously participated in our Latch On last year, we had seven nursing moms that came back this 2017 to participate with their now toddlers. What gave us more satisfaction was knowing that many of them were continuing with their extended breastfeeding journey.

“So wonderful to be part of this gathering again! I loved seeing the mothers and kiddos I met last year as well as made some new friends.” – Elizabeth Bonifacio ’16 &’17 MV Participant.

Breastfeeding into toddlerhood can bring its own set of challenges and if your family has grown then it can be even harder but definitely not impossible. A lot of people truly think that once the baby hits the first year mark there is no reason to continue nursing but the reality is that extended breastfeeding continues to provide your baby with enhanced nutrition, it helps boosts their immune system and brain development and it is also soothing and calming for both moms and their little ones.

“Thank you so much for a wonderful event! It was great to see everyone that participated in the past and meet some new moms and babes. I appreciate the empowerment each and every women shares with me just by being together.” – Sarah Mattson 2016 & 2017 MV Participant.

We couldn’t have done it alone…

Breastfeeding World started as a self funded photography project back in 2014 by our founder Alexia Garcia, it quickly became an online community that offers support to moms around the world and it’s still being self funded.

For our Coast to Coast Big Latch On events this year we were able to partner with some amazing companies and small business that made these events not only possible but extremely successful.

We would like to thank our MV Gold Contributors once again:

There was no judgment, no sneers, not a single negative aspect of the entire event. I know I didn’t talk to many people but it was still an amazing experience to share.” – said Lee Jaime Lutke 2017 MV participant.

It brings us great joy to announce that this year our efforts to “Spreading the Breastfeeding Love” have brought us far.

Just as previous years we will be hosting our annual most iconic and beloved Big Latch On events in Times Square, Central Indiana, Martha’s Vineyard and …… this 2017….. we’re bringing it to: Seattle, Washington!.

Thanks to the countless hours of voluntary work from my amazing Dream Team and our local lead volunteers as well as the support of the companies that contribute to our events, we were able to add another Big Latch On location. But that’s not the only good news…

Louisiana, are you ready for us?

Announcing Breastfeeding World's Louisianna Photoshooot with Jacob Breaux Photography, breastfeeding photography for World Breastfeeding Week

Earlier today I got on a very important phone call, I had the pleasure of talking to Jacob Breaux, from JacobBreaux Photography. What started as a hobby in his teen years quickly turned into a passion and now, a profession. In the past 6 years, Jacob has perfected his breathtaking pictures. With varying subjects, he loves making each picture more exciting than the previous one.

A few months ago, Jacob held a breastfeeding photo session for one of the local moms in the his area. After some planning, they met and worked on producing a beautiful breastfeeding session. Once he posted the final results on his Instagram and other social media accounts, he felt shocked by how much support and encouragement one image produced.

Milk Bath & Maternity Photography by Jacob Breaux, Breastfeeding World's Photographer

He was instantly hooked.

He loved seeing the happy faces of the families. But when he realized how important empowering the new nursing mother he had just photographed, his attention caught immediately. Now he suddenly understood the ‘normalizing breastfeeding’ movement, and decided to join by giving back his talent to his amazing Louisiana community.

Breastfeeding World is coming to Louisiana this 2017!

After talking with Jacob over the phone, I knew fit our goals perfectly, and asked him to join our team of Coast-to-Coast Breastfeeding World Photographers.

We are extremely happy to announce that Breastfeeding World + Jacob Breaux Photography have united efforts in “sharing the breastfeeding love”. Together we will gift a few Louisiana moms a group photo session.

Back in 2015 when dear friend and dream team member Lisa Maloney came to me with the idea of organizing our very first Big Latch On together in Times Square I had no idea this would turn into such a beautiful journey that would extend itself to two other communities.

Over 700 attendees later in our tri-state events, It is my pleasure to announce that Breastfeeding World will be holding it’s second annual breastfeeding celebration & Big Latch On on the beautiful island of Martha’s Vineyard this upcoming Friday August 4th.

For those who might be asking, what is the Big Latch On?

It’s an event that takes place at registered locations around the world, women gather together to breastfeed and offer peer support to each other. It aims to strengthen national and global support for nursing mothers and their children.

Moms around the globe come together in groups, large and small, and nurse their little ones for a synchronized session that lasts one minute starting at exactly 10:30 am. You can learn more about the global event here.

Remembering Martha’s Vineyard’s First Latch On…

On 2016 we had sixteen nursing mothers who joined us and our supporters in celebrating breastfeeding by coming together for the Global Big Latch On on the island. This event was part of Breastfeeding World’s initiative to bring these types of amazing family gatherings to smaller communities to create awareness and build stronger friendships between our moms.

In between laughter, excitement and a whole lot of cute little faces and baby toes the moms that attended last year expressed that they felt empowered, they felt united but most importantly they felt a part of something big.

We are truly excited at the prospect of choosing this year’s location soon. You see, I started Breastfeeding World as a photography project to showcase the beauty of breastfeeding and the importance of being able to do nurse in public as well. Iconic outdoor locations for our events have always been an important aspect to us and choosing the right one on this lovely island is truly a hard decision because Martha’s Vineyard has beautiful scenery no matter where you go.

Contribute to this year’s accomplishments

Breastfeeding World started as a self funded photography project and it slowly developed into a growing online community of like-minded families. It now relies on the superb team of volunteers that have joined me in making this dream come true.

To this date we are still self funded but as a team we work hard to be able to bring these events to the communities we love. We have decided that this year once again we would love to give our local businesses the chance to collaborate with us by joining our team of contributors.

If you are a business owner on Martha’s Vineyard that would like to contribute to our cause while getting promoted within our beautiful community of new mothers and families, please fill in the form below so we can chat more about it.

It is exciting for us to see how each year our number of participants and supporters increase, this means that our efforts and hard work are paying off because our message of “Sharing the breastfeeding love” is truly spreading around. Because of this we are open to get as many help as possible, if you are a breastfeeding supporter and would like to volunteer during our event please fill in this form and our volunteer coordinator will get you going.

I was nursing her when suddenly an officer came and told me that I couldn’t breastfeed. I explained to her that legally I had the right to do so but she argued that I didn’t.” said Vivian during our interview. The NYC mother of one then proceeded to send her child outside the room with a friend so that she could concentrate in the hearing until the officer approached her again, “I sat there by myself for about a minute before she [the officer] hovered over me again, pointed at me and told me ‘No I’m putting YOU out.'”

Feeling harrased and embarrassed, Vivian was forced to leave the courtroom, she had to call a third friend to come and take her place during the hearing to be able to keep herself informed of the ruling.

“I was hurt for being made felt like I was doing something wrong or inappropriate.” – Vivian Morales

NYC-Mother-Removed-from-courtroom-breastfeeding2.jpeg

Vivian quickly turned to one of the facebook communities she belongs to and asked for detailed information about breastfeeding laws in the state of NY. The supportive responses soon invaded Vivian’s post. Mothers all over NYC felt angry seeing how breastfeeding mothers are still being shamed for nursing in public.

The New York Civil Rights Law clearly states the following:

79-e. Right to breastfeed. Notwithstanding any other provision of law, a mother may breast feed her baby in any location, public or private, where the mother is otherwise authorized to be, irrespective of whether or not the nipple of the mother’s breast is covered during or incidental to the breast feeding.

NYC-Mother-Removed-from-courtroom-breastfeeding1.jpegAccording to the law Vivian’s rights to breastfeed in public were violated. The breastfeeding mother decided she would write a formal complaint about the incident so she spoke to the supervisor of the Court House asking her for the name and badge Id of the officer that had put her out failing to obtain it. She then proceeded to reach out to another officer in hopes that this one would help her but instead she overheard him criticizing her for wanting to file a complaint. “While I was waiting for the information to report her, two officers that were behind me were taking about the incident as If I were doing something wrong for reporting it,” Said Vivian.

Writing this post is not easy for me. As an Ecuadorian I have to admit that my heart is broken, being away from my home country during this difficult time leaves me feeling desperate. As you may (or may not know) this past Saturday April 16th, 2016 the Ecuadorian coast was hit by a major 7.8 earthquake.

While I was out and about with one of my dear friends and our babies enjoying the beatiful spring weather in NYC I received the call from one of my older brothers alerting me about the earthquake, he had tried calling my dad in Guayaquil and there was no answer. Soon that call became a four way call with all my siblings desperate, scared and feeling trapped without any news from my father nor any other family member. Fortunately about an hour after, my dad was able to call us and let us know he was ok, I can literally say I felt life coming back to me, the relief I felt was indescribable. Sadly, this story was not the same for many of my fellow Ecuadorians.

aptopix_ecuador_earthquake_45094421As the night approached we began seeing pictures of the devastation in our beloved country, entire cities had been destroyed, buildings everywhere had collapsed, bridges had fallen, Facebook soon became the outlet for desperate people trying to find their loved ones who were missing. Up to this day the 7.8 quake that hit Ecuador has left 577 dead, approximately 105 missing persons, 4.605 injured and 23,504  homeless families. There have been about 530 replications since Saturday, the most recent being a 6.6 quake on Thursday April 21st.

This is one of the most devastating natural events that has taken place in Ecuador since 1979. Esmeraldas, Manabi and Guayas were the three main provinces that suffered damages. Pedernales, a small city located in Manabi is practically all buried under debris. There are many cities that are still isolated. I’m proud to say that my compatriots have come together to help out all those who are in desperate need. Supermarkets have been emptied in an attempt to get them all water and main necessities. Unfortunately it hasn’t been enough.

Ecuador needs you, my country needs you!

Even though we are away we can still help, we want to do the best we can which is why I need you to help us help them!

Thousands of children have lost everything, many of them became orphans in a matter of seconds. The Ecuadorian infants, pregnant women, breastfeeding moms and children are in need of your help which is why Breastfeeding World is organizing a major collection of donations. We are working with the Ecuadorian Consulate in NYC as well as with TAME Ecuador (an Ecuadorian airline) to guarantee the prompt delivery of all donations.

It is with great joy that I share with you all this post. As you may already know Martha’s Vineyard is a very dear place to me, it was the perfect little island where I got to spend many amazing days during winter and summertime while I was in High School.

Part of my family lives on the island and just being here brings me so many happy memories like sitting in Ocean Park during a hot sunny day and admiring the view of both the cottage houses and the close by beach. No wonder why every islander says… Once you visit Martha’s Vineyard you’ll never want to leave!

This year, when we decided we were going to come to Martha’s Vineyard for our last bit of summer vacation right after our very first Big Latch On in NYC, I knew that our little trip to the island had to be the best. We had to do what both my little girl and I are good at…. Creating amazing memories!

That is how our very first oficial event took place. Best Milk? Mom’s Milk was made possible thanks to the amazing support we had from the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital, the YMCA of Martha’s Vineyard and business such as: Citrine MV, Made MV, Milk Makers, Mamma Chia, Silverette & The Naked Nursing Tank.

After our successful event, making Martha’s Vineyard Breastfeeding World photo session happen was so empowering! I got to meet four beautiful breastfeeding mommies who had difficulties at the beginning of their journey but they didn’t give up! We went to the oh so famous Gazebo in Ocean Park, one of the very touristic icons on the island where they breastfed their little ones with so much love!

The breastfeeding community on the island is not too big but it definitely is an amazing one. According to a conversation I had with Dr. Miller, pediatrician from MV Hopsital, the brazilian breastfeeding community is the most affected by lack of proper information and education leading to an average nursing period of 2-3 months.  Unfortunately it was impossible for us to find a current Brazilian breastfeeding mama on island during our session.

Saundra Hart and Baby Azealia LaBell

I knew breastfeeding would come naturally to me so when I finally started to nurse my baby I was shocked at the learning curve we both faced and the amount of pain I was in.  We eventually got in our groove and the pain started to fade until I forgot it had even been a factor. Then at two weeks my daughter started having severe digestive issues that caused her incredible stomach pain. She began to fall in the weight percentiles at her well visits. After some trips to the lab and a GI specialist we found out that she’s allergic to several foods I was eating. Her pediatrician suggested I stop breastfeeding her and put her on a special formula for babies with food allergies. I was devastated. This was supposed to be the easy part. I decided that my baby’s best interest was to be breastfed and changed my diet. I’ve always been a vegetarian but now I’ve cut out dairy, soy, wheat, and eggs. I’ve found reasonable dietary substitutes and my baby and I are both healthy now. It can be difficult when I just want ice cream or a sandwich but the nutritional and developmental benefits she receives are more important to me.

Sarah Mattson & Baby Emilia

Breastfeeding for me was a real challenge and test of my strength. Naturally I want what is best for my baby girl but I actually found it hard to bond with her during her feedings because it was so very painful. After treating a yeast infection in each breast and a split nipple the pain didn’t cease. It truly felt like I was being cut with small pieces of glass. It seemed to get worse even though I treated my breasts by letting the milk airdry and using cold compresses. All I could do was stare into Emilia’s eyes and cry because that is how I made it through each feeding. Every week I succeeded I committed to one more week. This went on for 8 weeks. Turns out I also had Reynauds of the nipple and had been exacerbating it with those treatments. But with warm compresses and the help and support of some very wonderful women in the breastfeeding network on the Vineyard, I have come to love breastfeeding my sweet little lady.

Melissa Schellhammer and Baby Juniper

Juniper was born pre-term and via cesarean section and it took her a long time to figure out how to latch. I am so grateful for the amazing nurses at the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital for teaching me safe bedsharing practices so that I could keep her skin to skin with me round the clock until we established a good nursing routine. I quickly realized that my body was not compatible with pumping so I worked hard to keep up a good supply and allowing Juniper to demand feed and co-sleep really helped with that. I struggled through 3 bouts of mastitis, one was so rough that I couldn’t even get out of bed. My goals for breastfeeding have changed over time; I went from hoping I could nurse my tiny baby to trying to at least make it to her first birthday, but I am proud to be still nursing my little two year old! There are definitely new challenges these days, mostly having to do with other people’s opinions on when enough is enough. My current breastfeeding goal is to think of what is best for Juniper and ignore everything else. Nursing has definitely not always been that perfect photo moment but every teardrop, every minute of lost sleep, every painful plugged duct disappears when I look down and see the comfort and nourishment that I am able to give to my beautiful Juniper.

We’d love tp hear from you! Share with us your up’s and down’s of your breastfeeding journey in the comments below!

Oh my, aren’t I happy and super excited! These past few weeks after our amazing success with our very first Big Latch On in Times Square we have actually been planning our next event on the beautiful island of Martha’s Vineyard.

The island has been our home for quite a while and it is my relaxing gateway during summer time. I remember during my pregnant days how much I loved being able to work with the nurses and doctors from the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital who gave me great advice and support when I most needed it.

I remember meeting just a few moms on the island who gave birth and breastfed but all of them were done nursing by the third month so it caused me a bit of surprise.

After our past Big Latch On I saw the importance of continuing to work towards our goal of promoting and normalizing breastfeeding and I knew hat reaching small communities were, although breastfeeding is supported it is not widely practiced, was important for the breastfeeding world on the island.

best milk? mom's milk, a breastfeeding celebration, breastfeeding world, nyc breastfeeding world,

Considering that August is Breastfeeding Awareness month we will be celebrating it our own way! Best Milk? Mom’s Milk is an initiative created by us Breastfeeding World with the help of the Maternity Ward from the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital and the Breastfeeding Network on the island. We will be uniting forces to encourage islander mother’s to take the path of nursing their little ones and we truly hope to reach as many current breastfeeding moms to join us. We will have a super amazing event including raffles, giveaways, Breastfeeding Counseling, discounted photo packages for a memorable breastfeeding photo session with Alegares Photography and most importantly we will have a free group picture, we want to photograph Martha’s Vineyard’s Breastfeeding World.

Best Milk? Mom’s Milk will take place on Wednesday August 26 at the YMCA of Martha’s Vineyard from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm.

Thankfully we have been able to collaborate with some great businesses from around the country that believe in the beauty and benefits of breastfeeding so please give it up for our amazing sponsors who have made our upcoming raffle possible! Thank you for supporting our cause!
