When you are an artist it can some times be tricky to find the right inspiration or the right muse that will help you start off a project and not look back… I on the other hand was very fortunate.
On August of 2014 during the International Breastfeeding Week, I had the chance to go to the Big Latch On over in Inwood for my very first time and then to a breastfeeding party that took place in Central Park, NYC. During these two events I met some wonderful mommas and their little ones who where so confident with nursing in public, I also met some moms that had a rough breastfeeding journey but had been able to overcome all the difficulties and kept nursing. It was surprising for me to see all these ladies and babies gathered in one place but to be honest I expected to see much more moms participating in such wonderful events.
My baby girl, my inspiration, my love, Dominique
Days went by, and one night while nursing my baby girl I saw her eyes closing as she peacefully fell asleep; I thought to myself “this is beautiful, the bond between me and my baby while breastfeeding is indeed beautiful and unique.” Right then, right that instant, my lovely Dominique became the muse for this amazing project that I had never considered before: NYC Breastfeeding World.
As a photographer I had promised myself that I would create beautiful pieces of art. With each image I took, I would capture unique and meaningful moments that would tell a story for a lifetime and I knew that I had to use my photography skills to make a change in my community, to make a change in the world. I remember I could not go back to sleep that night, it was one idea after the other that swamped my brain… I remember waking up very early in the morning and calling my mom and my older brother Christian and telling them ” I need your help”… and so, our brainstorming sessions began.
Just like many other wonderful projects we’ve created together, this one began taking its form but time was against us, fall was just around the corner and I needed to start the photo sessions sooner rather than later. I had decided to find 50 NYC breastfeeding moms and gift each of them a professional mini sessions, I decided to unite with some very talented makeup artist and other photographers who volunteered their time and talent to make the beginning of this project possible. (Make sure you meet our team!)
It has been a long process: from the creation of this website, to the editing of each of the sessions which was crafted with lots of love and attention to details. We wanted to capture the beauty of breastfeeding as well as the importance of being able to nurse in public; we also wanted to share the tough experiences that many of these beautiful women and their babies went through during their journey. In the following blog posts we will be sharing all this stories as well as more behind the scenes shots of our sessions.
With this movement we aim to create awareness of the importance of breastfeeding as well as motivate new moms and moms-to-be to take the path of nursing, we want to be here for you, to support you and encourage you to keep going all the way, this is what NYC’s Breastfeeding World stands for!
With your help we hope to reach other cities around the world and encourage not fifty moms, but thousands! Thanks to everyone that so far has made this project possible and thanks to God for giving me the most beautiful muse I could have asked for.
Be sure to join us in our social media accounts to be up to date with the progress of our project!
And… Don’t forget to share your brelfies using our HT #NYCBreastfeedingWorld
