The things I don’t Say; I am Grateful for my Husband

Dear Hubby,

I know that in the hustle and bustle of our day to day, crazy, loud, erratic life, I do not always tell you how grateful I am to you. I am tired. Sleep deprived and coffee guzzling,  I am focused on the next, constant housecleaning task. I focus on the child that needs an extra snuggle, the baby that needs nursed, the daily preschooler disagreement that needs mediated. I love it, I love it all- even the moments where I text you, frustrated and venting, with the details of Our Girl’s latest threenager episode.

So Grateful for your relationship with our girl

In the midst of all this glorious chaos, you are often forgotten. Even when you sweep in to change a diaper, empty the dishwasher, mediate a fight. When you step up so that I can have a rare moment with a quickly cooling cup of coffee, still I forget you. I am so grateful for that moment, and all the other moments you give me. You see, I am so busy reveling in that minute of peace, that I wonder if you know how grateful I am to you.

The holidays are here, with the passing of Thanksgiving and the Hustle and Bustle of the Christmas season, I find myself counting my blessings. I count our healthy, happy children, our warm and inviting home, a job I enjoy, and always at the top of the list, is you. If I am the engine that runs our family and home, you are its oil, helping it run smoothly.

During the birth of our children, you were there. You always wanted to be sure that everyone was taken care of. You visited family in the waiting room so that I can rest, joked with nurses, handed out banana muffins I made for the staff. When it came time to bring our babies into the world, you never left my side.

In those early weeks, struggling with breastfeeding, you were there. You never hesitated to bring me water, change a diaper, or run to  the store for something we needed. I will never forget bringing our son home.  In the chaos and excitement of the new baby,  Little Girl decided that she was DONE and had to have only mom. O was crying for milk as she clung to my legs, both kids wanting only me.  I calmly soothed them both and looked up at you. As I looked at your face, I saw tears in your eyes, because you so desperately wanted to be able to be there for them even when they decided that only mom will do. In that moment, I knew that I could not ask for a better husband, a more loving father. I could not love you more in that moment, surrounded by our new family, seeing the love and desire to help in your eyes. In that moment I was so grateful to call you ours.

You see, we still live in a society where women jokingly complain about how “clueless” their husbands are with household chores. As a nanny, I sat in horror as I listened to the mother tell me that her husband had never, not once given any of their three kids a bath. But you break the mold. You fold laundry, bath the children, change their diapers, go grocery shopping, you do what it takes to make sure the gears and cogs of our family workings are carefully and lovingly oiled. You proudly wear our children while doing yard work, you go on dates with our daughter, you bring me starbucks when I have had a particularly tiresome night. In return, you never, ever ask for anything for yourself.

So I am writing this letter to you, my Husband. To let you know that even though in the hubbub of the holidays and chaos of our daily lives, I notice. I notice the love, devotion, and selflessness that you pour daily into our family. I notice  that you rarely put a task off as my responsibility. In every way, at home, at work, with our families, we are partners. We are united. As the business of our lives pass, I hold a hope for our children.  I can hope that our children see and aspire to be the kind of loving, caring adult that you show them. I hope that our son grows to be the kind of caring partner and husband you are. I hope that our daughter holds her standards high, and looks for the type of man who cherishes her, supports her, comforts her as she sees you do.

For that, and for all you do, I am Grateful to you.

With the holiday season coming along let’s make sure you start by thanking and appreciating all those loved ones who stand by you and support you in any and every way!
