This post took longer than expected to be published and I apologize for that, things with Alegares Photography have thankfully gotten busier but I’m doing my best at keeping up with everything related to the project as well.
That being said… On June 5 the lovely Lisa Maloney and I, Alexia García, organized a Nurse-In in front of VH1’s Big Morning Buzz tv show located in the heart of Times Square, NYC. We wanted to peacefully protest the shameful comments towards breastfeeding mothers made by two presenters of the show: Michelle Buteau and Candace Bailey.

On VH1’s Big Morning Buzz show May 27th tv show, Nick Lachey and his co-presenters responded to Hoda Kotb  & Kathy Lee Gifford’s original comments in regards to #brelfies being ‘TMI’. Michelle Buteau said  “I think moms are getting it confused with us saying that breastfeeding is bad, it is not, what we are saying is that [posting breastfeeding pictures online] is TMI, you don’t have to post it on instagram or social media for us, we know what it looks like”. To which Candace Bailey responded “I breastfeed and I don’t want to post that online… I feel that if you are out in public and you are breastfeeding you should put something over because it is just respectful to other people.”

Due to these obvious shameful comments we staged a second nurse-in in the heart of Manhattan, Times Square. We had twelve amazing moms and babies join us in our peaceful protest. With little flags that read “stop shaming mothers” and signs that read “Eat Local” & “Normalize Breastfeeding” mothers nursed their babies in public without a cover.

Our goal is to encourage other mothers to be comfortable with nursing their babies in public, we are not telling them to only nurse without a cover but lets be realistic, most babies 6 months and older can’t stand having a cover on top of them while eating, why should we force them and make breastfeeding uncomfortable for both mothers and babies? Don’t they both deserve respect as well?

Everyone should be able to nurse or feed their babies in the best way they see fit, but why shame mothers who choose to breastfeed in public and share their pictures online? there is no need for that.

Thanks to all the lovely moms who took the time to be a part of this greater cause: normalizing breastfeeding!
